Tier 2
Option 5:
There's a lot of solid contenders for defensive player of the year every season and of course this year is no different. When considering options for this year's top defensive player there's a couple names that come to mind as players who really stood head and toes above the competition. Of course I'd love to toot my own horn in this slot but even though I had one of my best statistical seasons to date I think there was a couple of guys who topped me. My fellow season 17 draftee, Honda Edmond, had a fantastic campaign leading the league with 135 tackles, and tagging on 3 sacks and two pass deflections while leading his Copperheads to an 8-4-1 record. Although an impressive season I'm still not convinced it was the best season. Rookie Zamir Kehla, whether you love or hate his controversial player, also had an impressive season. Lining up at CB he managed to rack up a mind shattering 85 tackles to go along with his 4 interceptions which is tied for second in the league. On top of that the kid managed to take two of those turnovers to the house to lead all defensive players in touchdowns. Another cornerback who also caught my eye is veteran all star AJ Lattimore who lead the league in pass deflections at 24 while also being tied for the league lead in interceptions at five. Although all of these guys had impressive seasons I think the competition for the coveted defensive player comes down to two guys - the incumbent, Mo Berry and up and comer Maurice Virtanen. Mo Berry had another disgusting season as a do it all linebacker for the Ultimus champion Colorado Yeti. The one again put up over 100 tackles while also adding four turnovers in the form of 3 forced fumbles and 3 interceptions. He was also a menace in the backfield taking town QBs 11 times while also deflecting 14 passes. Maurice on the other hand had 17 less tackles overall than Berry but managed to get to the QB an impressive 12 times while also deflecting 10 passes. At the end of the day I think the clear cut winner for defensive player of the year is Mo Berry - once again. The guy just seems to do it all and although Virtanen had an all star calibre season, everything he did Mo did just a little bit better. I think the future is very bright for Maurice but for this season Berry is bringing home an Ultimus and a defensive player of the year trophy.
Option 7:
What has Mervin Leonard accomplished up to this point in his career? Well entering the NSFL I had big dreams of winning - a lot - and ending my career as a record holder en route to a place in the hall of fame. Well, after 7 seasons in the DSFL and NSFL how have I made out? Well, in 7 seasons I have been to 6 championship games (2 Ultiminis and 4 Ultimus') and have lost every single one - that has to be close to a record doesn't it? I had a huge rookie season in the DSFL winning Defensive Player of the Year and defensive back of the year but unfortunately none of that really counts when it comes to voters considering hall of fame credentials. I did managed to snag myself a pro bowl spot back in season 20 and if I was a betting man I'd say that I'm likely to get the nod for another pro bowl this season but is a multi pro bowl career really what I was hoping for? If we look at my career stats I have racked up 278 career tackles, 17 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles (not really a peanut Tillman), and 70 pass deflections. None of these stats are anywhere near any type of a record at this point in my career and barring some huge seasons into regression I don't forsee that changing much. Although Mervin came into the league with big aspirations at this point in his career he has realized where his place is in the league and what he wants to be remembered for. He'll never be the hall of fame record holder he intended to be but he will be remembered by his team mates as a reliable, consistent player who was willing to do anything it takes to help the team win. He'll be remembered by his opponents as a fierce competitor who is willing to matchup with anyone and do whatever it takes to shut them down. He will be remembered as one of the few active members of the Season 17 draft who stuck it out and made some type of a difference in the league. Mervin Leonard may never win a championship or a defensive player of the year like he had hoped, but he has won plenty of Wraiths team game balls during his stint in the league and at the end of the day that's what this is all about - friendship and fun!
