I think the biggest struggle for me in Marcella Toriki's career has been finding a way to balance the dream and reality, as well as self and team. Marcella Toriki is a good player at the end of the day. She's the most efficient running back in NOLA franchise history, and over the course of the last 5 seasons has averaged roughly 950 yards per season. She has had some phenomenal games and seasons. Notably, her first season in New Orleans was punctuated by 12 touchdowns, over double the 5 she got her rookie season. In signing with New Orleans, I knew that to some extent I was sacrificing personal glory in terms of awards in order to be on a highly competitive team. We won the Ultimus last season, so that goal is certainly being met. But it is hard sometimes to see others with a higher level of personal success. Toriki has yet to make a pro bowl, and has precious few awards to mark her time in the league. While perhaps slightly undeserving, she has managed to received a running back of the year nomination this year, making it her first award nomination outside of Offensive Rookie of the Year, which she won in 2033.
She's hitting her prime, and I remain hopeful that she will get a cut of the glory someday. But as a fairly competitive person, it can be hard playing second fiddle to the living legend Forrest Gump, who has been the dominant running back in his class for basically his entire career. His success is New Orleans' success, so in no way am I unhappy that he's been able to be such a titan on the field. It just provides some very real comparison, given that both running backs have the same offensive line and quarterback. Given the same resources, the comparison is in certain regards fairer than others. But regardless, I love Marcella Toriki. I love her career journey so far, and I love that she dawns the purple and teal for the New Orleans Second Line. Winning an Ultimus with that team felt spectacular, and I sincerely look forward to winning another with the Second Line before my career is up. I don't really have any hopes of Toriki making it into the league's Hall of Fame at this point, so my big goal is to cement her status in the team Hall of Fame so that her name can live on in some capacity. Adding another ring or two is something else I hope is in the cards. In summation, I'm not unhappy with Marcella Toriki's career thus far. I just hope that she can find a tiny bit more success to push her into a place where I can meet my goal for her.
