Many people have listened to Lorde’s hit single “Royals” and how it discusses the artist’s struggle with dealing with newfound fame. However, it is a little known fact that Lorde was actually a fan of the DSFL team the London Royals and the entire song is a double entendre about her love of the team. My name is Mattress Cadaire. Let me take you through the music and dissect this song in complete depth.
I've never seen a diamond in the flesh
Lorde is upset that she has not been able to watch the London Royals play in person. She attributes a lot of value to the team by referring them as a “diamond”
I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies
She is professing her love for the team and admitting she wishes she could marry all the players on the team with a wedding ring. Since this concept is impossible in real life, she fantasizes this idea as happening in a movie, where a fictional plot can turn this theoretical dream into a major motion picture.
And I'm not proud of my address, in the torn up town
No post code envy
This line refers to the first line of the song as it explains why she hasn’t seen the Royals play in person yet. She is not proud of where she lives in New Zealand as it keeps her far away from her favorite team.
But every song's like gold teeth, Grey Goose, trippin' in the bathroom
Bloodstains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room
She parallels other DSFL teams to “songs”. While they may appear flashy and entertaining like gold teeth and Grey Goose, you may notice that all the items she lists in this line have a negative connotation. False teeth show cavities, trippin’ in the bathroom is not a luxurious place to do drugs, bloodstains show violence, and trashin’ the hotel room is an immoral deed. Other DSFL teams appear cool at first glance but are actually not desirable past their surface image.
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams
She puts it plainly that she “doesn’t care” about the other DSFL teams. Instead, she’s enjoying the ride of her fandom of the one true great team – the Royals. Being a fan of the Royals is akin to driving a Cadillac.
But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair
This is another reference to the other DSFL teams and how they’re only nice on the surface. She shows that she will not be brainwashed by the inferior teams’ flashiness as she states “we aren’t caught up in your love affair”
And we'll never be royals
It don't run in our blood
Lorde is now speaking from the perspective of the other DSFL teams and how they are upset that they cannot compete with the London Royals and how they are jealous that they will never be like them.
That kind of lux just ain't for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
These other DSFL teams don’t want to train hard like the Royals do. They are just in it for a different reason (buzz), to get a paycheck.
Let me be your ruler, you can call me Queen B
And baby I'll rule (I'll rule I'll rule I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy
Owning a sports franchise is a rare privilege that many wish they could do. Lorde is no different. She wanted to become a superstar musician to build wealth so she can afford to purchase the London Royals so she can be their new owner. It is a difficult task which is why she refers to the idea as a “fantasy” that she wants to live. This fantasy has a double meaning since it also refers to the line in the first verse of her wanting to marry the entire team.
My friends and I we've cracked the code
We count our dollars on the train to the party
And everyone who knows us knows that we're fine with this
We didn't come from money
Lorde has figured out how to turn her fantasy into reality. To purchase her dream team, she must first accumulate money while also networking with powerful people who may be at the “party”. She is also stating that her friends and family know of her goal and are supportive of it. Although she “didn’t come from money”, she is willing to put in the effort to achieve the impossible and buy the team.
But every song's like gold teeth, Grey Goose, trippin' in the bathroom
Bloodstains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams

Let me be your ruler, you can call me Queen B
And baby I'll rule (I'll rule I'll rule I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy
We're bigger than we ever dreamed, and I'm in love with being queen
(Ooh ooh oh)
She has now fast forwarded in time to her theoretical future in which she is the team owner. The franchise is now bigger and better with her at the helm and she is enjoying her tenure at the owner.
Life is great without a care
We aren't caught up in your love affair
Her life is amazing now that she has completed her dream. And she notes that she made the right choice of picking the Royals over other DSFL teams that tried to tempt her with their flashiness.
And we'll never be royals
It don't run in our blood
That kind of lux just ain't for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler, you can call me Queen B
