I’m going to take a bit of a different approach to this one. Instead of talking about getting drafted, I want to talk about my first draft as a GM. Coming into my very first draft, I had a very active role within my team’s war room with scouting and planning. We had a game plan, and we knew who we wanted. Except I wasn’t GM yet. No, that little tidbit happened the day before the draft started. I was lucky to have been mentored by some very wise individuals otherwise I would have been completely lost. The first pick of my career was a very easy one. It was no surprise that we wanted to bring @Sermokala home, and when he fell to us at 6OA, we snapped him up right away. The second pick of the draft was where it got interesting. We had been hoping that one of two players would drop to us at 14, but as it would happen, they went 9 and 10 overall respectively. When it got to 14, both our guys were gone. At that point, we had to make a call – with a depleted defense, and a draft which was absolutely lacking in defensive players, we chose to draft for quality over quantity. We moved our 2nd and our 5th round picks to pick up one of the highest players on our draft board, and hopefully made their night. That was my first “big draft moment” as a GM.
