My complete guess is that the third pick can more easily react to both directions of the snake draft, and in turn is able to adapt based on who was taken before them. I feel like personally my worst fantasy finishes are when I miss out on the top tier of a position group. So maybe having the first/last picks in your group you're more likely to miss out on a run of a position since you're drafting at the end of rounds. I'm probably completely wrong but it sounded reasonable in my head.
