I went back and forth quite a bit on where I wanted the team to be located. At first, I thought, maybe go across the pond and add another team in the UK to rival the Royals or down south to Rival the Luchadores. Then it occurred to me, we have no Canadian teams. As I tried to decide on a city for Canada, I realized USA > Canada, so I went all the way through Canada and stopped in Alaska. I settled for Anchorage because it’s the biggest city and would be able to handle a pro team. There are lots of things that make Anchorage unique from all the other teams. I really wanted to do something with the Northern Lights, put I dislike two-word names for teams and figured the jerseys could have the northern lights coloring. Now, that’d be dope. There were also Totem Poles to consider and Eskimos, but I didn’t want to end up in a Washington Redskins situation. So, I ultimately settled for everyone’s favorite animal: a dog. Alaska is famous for its dog racing, aka, mushing. I like short, one syllable team names, so I shortened it to the Anchorage Mush. I considered Mush Dogs or Mushers, but they didn’t quite have the simplicity. Also, I really like team names that take an event with multiple moving parts and turn it into a singular application, like the Colorado Avalanche. In our case here, the Mush would be a set of well-trained dogs, working as a team, to beat their opponents. And before you say it, I know, it sets itself up for trash talk from rivals as mush is also a soggy form of cornbread. I’m not the owner or president of the team, so I’ll let the big wigs make the final decision on the team name, but it should have something to do with the sport of Mushing.
