In all the years I've played sport at social, amateur and professional levels I've discovered that two of my favourite things in the world come our of sport and team environments. The first is an easy guess at winning, the other is team camaraderie and mateship. And it's bloody good when you are playing in a good team with a bunch of your best mates and you pull off a miracle win.
One time that comes to mind was when I was a younger fella playing amateur sport back in Queensland. I was playing in the local Aussie Rules comp. We had a fairly decent side that year and playing with a bunch of top blokes we were having a blast every weekend. One game came around against top of the ladder we were looking forward to for weeks. Game day comes and it's pelting cats and dogs. For anyone who hasn't seen or touched a Sherrin it's slick red leather so as soon as it get's wet it's impossible to pick up. It also get's waterlogged so feels like kicking a brick.
The game was very tight due to the sloppy nature of the game and coming down to the final minutes they were 4 points ahead. Getting the ball down out wing as best we could. Jonesy gets a handball to me and I just turn and hack it forward as best I can in the conditions and somehow found Bazza who took a mark 55 metres out. Not a moment after he took this mark the final siren goes. He's got one kick to make it count. Kick a goal and we win - anything else and we're cooked.
We're all watching him run in, get's to his point and kicks this ball as hard as he can. As it travelled through the air it felt like slow motion and coming down just cleared the defenders heads on the goal like by mere centimetres.
Watching that ball sail through the posts and knowing we'd won in those circumstances was one of my favourite sporting moments I've ever been apart of and just makes me want to be the person kicking a goal after the siren to get my team a win.
It almost happened today too except the sim is dumb and we spiked the ball on the first 5 yards from the Wraiths goal line then had a turnover on downs while down by 6 but whatever. I'm not bitter. Haha.
