I’m pretty sure everyone can guess it from his interviews, but Guy Fields actually learned German before he learned how to speak English. His parents moved to the US before he was born, but were still pretty Austrian in their upbringing and didn’t speak English very well. So that’s what they taught their son when he was born one year after their move to Vienna, Illinois. For the first few years, Guy didn’t really speak a lot more English than was totally necessary for his day to day life, which was not a lot as a toddler. Once he joined Elementary School, his teachers started to realize he has a substantial deficiency in regards to spoken and written English. He was put on a special program for children who need to focus on their English language and was getting better quickly. A year later, he was able to join the regular classes and learn with the other children. He would still speak German with his parents at home but convinced them to take on English lessons. Although pretty soon he would talk grammatically pretty much flawless English with his peers at school or his friends outside of school, there was still an accent that he never was able to get rid of totally, so up to this day, people tend to give him the nickname of “Arnie” after the star of many action movies with whom he shares his common ancestry.
