Back in high school, Eldrick Avery had a terrible problem. He played wide receiver for his high school team, and was the most athletic player on his team by a mile, but he couldn’t catch a football to save his life. Avery set the single season national high school record with 68 drops in his freshman season. Because of this, he promptly switched positions that offseason and became a cornerback. So that was that, Avery now played defense, and his problem with dropping footballs with never bother him again. Or so he thought. Avery is now a starting cornerback for the Baltimore Hawks of the ISFL. He had a solid rookie season, and played well again in his second season in the league, however it was then that his problem with drops reared its ugly head once again. Avery managed to finished top 5 in the league in pass deflections, and was actually first in the entire NSFC, with 20. Normally, that would be a strong enough effort to make the Pro Bowl. Unfortunately for Avery, he didn’t manage to snag a single interception all season long. He got his hands on the football 20 times, and likely had countless other opportunities, but he didn’t manage to catch a single football. He was the only player in the top 20 for pass deflections that didn’t record a single interception. If he had managed even 1, it is quite possible it would have been enough for a Pro Bowl nod. We’ll see if anything changes this season, but I wouldn’t count on it. So far it’s been 2 game, no picks, same old story.
