Way back in the eldritch days of Season 10, a young, bright-eyed rookie from Slidell, Louisiana was called up to play for the San Jose SaberCats for the first time. Kolby Deringer, the defensive pride of the University of Texas, took the field following the opening kickoff against their in-state rivals, the Orange County Otters. What's on the tape is that on his very first drive, the second play from scrimmage, Deringer vaulted over the trenches, into the backfield, and brought down his old Kansas City Coyotes teammate and then-OCO QB Gus T.T. Showbiz for a safety.

What people did not see is that after the game, despite the game ending in defeat for the Cats, that play and the remainder of his performance that night earned Deringer the game ball, as he would pick up 7 tackles, 2 sacks, and recover a fumble in addition to the safety. That very night, he and the rest of the veterans on defense treated the rookies - Deringer, Odell Marrett, and D'Pez Poopsie - to a night out pub crawling in San Jose. The trio got their first takedowns and nicks in, and there would be plenty more.

Despite being named defensive player of the game in that matchup, Deringer, like the other two, had the tab sprung on them the first time they were headed out to another place. They were told to expect drinks to be on them all night long. Perhaps all season long if they didn't find another way to break the newbies in.
