Even though the DSFL has only had 1 week of regular season play out so far, we can see a couple of surprising trends that are starting with one team in particular. That team is the London Royals.
The London Royals split their 4 preseason games down the middle. Losing the first two, then showing their potential by winning the two that followed. And we saw this trend continue into the regular season when they defeated their NFC rival Grey Ducks in a close 24-21 road victory. But you may ask why this is significant? It's just the first game, there are so many more to play. However the worst defeat the Royals suffered in the preseason was a 32-12 drumming by the Grey Ducks, and then the Royals not only come back and beat them in their own house during the first week, but they already have sole possession of first place in the NFC! Both the Coyotes and the Pythons lost in the first week as well. The Royals can already claim that they control their own destiny!
And this brings me to my second surprising trend, one that plays a direct role in the manifestation of the first. Charlamagne Cortez, the QB for the London Royals had a record breaking game in week one. But it was not just a record breaking game, but it was a record breaking game three times over. That is right, Cortez broke 3 team records on his way to leading the Royals to victory and claiming the offensive game ball for London. But this was not necessarily a predictable outcome. You see, Cortez did not start off the preseason on the right foot. In the first two preseason games, which happened to be the ones that were televised, Cortez put up shockingly bad numbers. His passer rating of 66.1 in the first preseason game only tumbled even further to a worrisome 36.5 passer rating against the Grey Ducks in the second preseason game. But the upward trend that started in the 3rd and 4th preseason games went unknown to the majority of the world due to those games not being broadcast. So when Cortez played the best game of his young career during week 1 of the regular season, he shocked the league.
And if Cortez can keep up this trend, I am sure the London Royals as a team will follow suit. The desired result of hoisting the Ultimini trophy is still a ways off, but it is definitely is a damn good first step on that path.
