Being new to the league, I’ve tried to learn who the historically good and bad teams are. The name I most commonly got for “bad” was Chicago. I’ve heard how poor decisions and strategy led to Chicago being a consistently bottom tier team. However, I also heard that this year would be different. This would be the best team Chicago has had in a while. I like an underdog story, and without any dog in the race of the ISFL, I hoped the Butchers would prove my expectations wrong. However, they weren’t up to the task. It’s still pretty early in the season, and a 1-3 record can be turned around, but it’s certainly still a hole. Moral can take a greater hit than usual if you have high hopes and expectations, and I wonder what the atmosphere is like in the Chicago locker room these days. Not only that, I wonder how their upper management is reacting to their recent results. I’ve heard that an issue in the past for Chicago was their impatience to craft a long term foundation for their team, opting instead for a “win-now” strategy. If what I heard is true, and this is Chicago’s best team in some time, then they would do best to not panic and simply ride this wave out and continue looking to the draft. Surely with a consistent amount of high picks they can eventually craft a solid team for the future.
