Thor Kirkby definitely deserves some kind of award- whether it is safety of the year or defensive performance of the year- with the performance he had showed so far into the season. Currently at week 9, Kirkby has 44 tackles, 7 sacks, 2 picks and 5 passes deflected, 2 forsed fumble(one recovered) and a safety and a defensive touchdown each. That puts Kirkby tied for 5th in sacks and tied for 7th in intrrceptions as a free safety. While the numbers aren't that super impressive when they are seen individually, Kirkby accumulated significant number of stats in all the relevant categories of the defence while sitting at a relatively low TPE level of 551. He also has plenty 'impact' stats. Currently, Kirkby is the only player in the ISFL to score both a safety and a defensive touchdown. That is unsurprising, since circumstances required for each stats are quite different by nature. Also those moments of impact- his safety, pick six and two forced fumbles- tend to come in a moment of dire need. For instance, Kirkby's safety in week 2 Yellowknife game came in the last minute, when the Wraith had possession with all their timeouts. The safety prematuarely ended their drive and their hopes for the win in the close game. Kirkby, while being a low TPE player, had excelled in all categories of defense while making a name for himself as a clutch player on the fearsome Yeti defense. I will be surprised if he doesn't get any awards after keeping up with his current pace for the rest of this season. (265)
