New City. New Players. New Team.
New, new, new. That's the thing with expansion teams, everything is brand new you have to build everything from the ground up and you have to create a entirely new atmosphere and being one of the few veterans brought on the team by management I took it upon myself to introduce myself to every member of the team.
With the introductions dealt with I could tell we had a good bunch of lads in and that the GM's had brought in some real quality individuals.
The assistant GM of the team Fox North is kind of old school in the way he likes to run a practise and decided the best way for us all to get properly acquainted would be a team wide tackling drill. Everyone's name would be put in a hat, and names would be drawn out to decide who would be the attacker and who would be the defender. We stood round North who was holding this battered old blue beany hat with a bright yellow bobble as he took names out. "Defender Drew Davidson Defensive End" and he reached in and pulled out another name and did a double take then smirked, "Attacker Stephen Harris Kicker". A roar of laughter went round the group.
I stood on the line and faced the massive DE as the rest of the guys lined up either side. Planning in my head to go back to rugby routes and maybe trick him with a side step and as I'm pretty nippy for a kicker maybe my pace would deceive him. I ran as fast as my legs would carry me down the middle of the channel and tried to juke left then right to go past him. This did not work and out of nowhere something that felt like a car smashed me off my feet.
I hopped up to my feet as fast I could and shook his hand "Good hit mate." and wandered back to the sidelines as sympathetic pats on the helmet and shoulder pads were handed out as the next victims prepared themselves and I pretended that my rib cage hadn't just been crushed thinking to myself that I must have pissed him off in some way when I introduced myself.
I actually feel kind of sorry for anyone who lines up against Davidson now I've been there myself.
