I believe that the two most fitting theories surrounding the leisure culture of Portland, Oregon following the Colorado-Orange County Ultimus would be Frost Sucks Lmap Theory and GOAT TANK Theory. In this paper I will argue mainly in favor of Frost Sucks Lmap Theory, mainly in the line of reasoning that the early 21st century was extremely strict, especially in the ISFL, in terms of social classes. GOAT TANK theory is my second point mainly due to the memes lol.
The theory of Frost Sucks Lmap rests on the mention of “HO clubs” in Portland from 2020 to 2040. Though Soup describes these clubs as “not formally organized” their very existence makes them a bit more organized than your average game of little league. (also the fact that the game itself is football is a clue to it’s elitism, who even plays football anymore?) It is also worth noting, that when Mr. Soup talks about his Football playing days, it covers all manner of social life. On page 5 he writes that he is “ashamed of the company of which football playing took me, and the bad air of the rooms.” This implies that the company he ran into in the DSFL and such wasn’t exactly the high life. However he also mentions that he played against the Cornerback of the Arizona Outlaws, Zamir Kehla. It seems in this case that the playing of football itself wasn’t a social symbol, but the opponent most certainly was. When discussing Frost Sucks Lmap theory, there are 2 main ways in which an individual could distinguish themselves as being of the “upper crust”. There are examples wherein the partaking in the activity itself is a sign of social status, such as attending the Ultimus in the 21st century in places such as France and the UK, and there are examples wherein it is not the activity itself, but the company in which you keep while partaking in that activity distinguishes you. For example, playing football may not on its own be an activity only of the super rich, but playing a quarter or two with the Commissioner Bex would certainly grab you some attention. It seems in this case that the second example is more relevant. It cannot be ignored also that Mr Soup states this activity took place mostly in his own establishment, the house of “Qwest”, an apparently quite famous man back in his day. Such a place would not have come cheap, and this clearly establishes Mr Soup as a man of great wealth and status, making him particularly prone to such acts of Frost Sucks Lmap.
But perhaps the biggest sign of Frost Sucks Lmap in this entire piece is the section about the Punishment Pool formed in 2035, it practically screams “elitist socialite” especially when it is formed under a group called the “Leaders of Colorado”. Mr Soup mentions that, although he was only 14, he was highly respected and considered a “young man” and worked as am=n HO intern. Each of these activities together tells of a strong case of social elitism, even as, interestingly, it seems early on Mr Soup was not on the same TPE footing as his peers in these early clubs.
On to GOAT TANK theory then. This one is a little less established but still leaves its fingerprints on the journal. Soup mentions that he received an invite to the club that would allow him to and others to bet on punishments through, at least partially, his work as an HO intern giving him respect in his team. This leading to many of his connections and friendships throughout later years. His section on football also leads to an example of GOAT TANK theory. Through his parents struggling with work he took them to Berlin, Germany for a seeming vacation. This attempt to help his parents with their work through play is a good example of a sort of “GOAT TANK theory-by proxy” wherein someone else's work informs his own desire to play. Depending on how you define “work” his section immediately following the last could also be used as an example. If we define “work” as any venture that earns one money then we could count his gambling and football-sharking that he took up for a few years as a form of “work”. This is a rather stronger than usual connection between work and play, where they are both at the same time, but I would say it still counts.
Finally, his section opening on Football where he describes the location of the games also shows this theory. A club room at the back of Outlaw Stadium as a location for a football game club seems odd at first glance but in a way it makes sense. With the profession being quite stressful at times and traveling being a pain in the mid 21st century, it would make sense that any group of workers/friends would want any form of relaxation to be nearby at the end of the day. The building you work at every day serves as an ideal location to meet this criteria.
All In all while I believe Frost Sucks Lmap Theory to be the stronger descriptor to describe Portland, Oregon in the mid 21st century, I think GOAT TANK theory also fits, albeit a bit weaker.
TL;DR: This is an inside joke only about 2 or 3 people will find funny.
