Most people may not even consider this to be "drama", but at the time it caught the entire league by suprise. The NSFL was in its infancy and general managers were eagerly preparing for the inaugural NSFL draft. The Orange County Otters had the first overall pick and most everyone had Baylor star wide receiver Josh Garden down as the obvious choice. Slowly news started to leak that Garden had requested that the Otters pass on him because he didn't want to play in their anticipated offensive setup. The draft day came and the Otters took J.J. Reigns instead, leaving the Yellowknife Wraiths to take Josh Garden at #2 overall. I can fully see why Josh Garden would want to play with players who would fully utilize his talents, but what is funny is that in the end the Otters ended up changing things up and going with the exact offense that Garden had hoped to play in. Now two seasons in it seems that things have worked out for both parties. J.J. Reigns helped shape the Orange County Otters roster and Josh Garden got to play with season 1 top quarterback award winner, Chris Orosz. There was speculation that Garden may leave the Wraiths for free agency but the team was able to retain him for at least one more season.
