The mascot of Yellowknife has evolved since the early days of the league. The franchise started out with “Old Man Wraith”. A pirate, Rob Zombie looking fellow with a long gray flowing beard. I believe it was about season 2 when the organization went with the completely dead spooky Wraith. Since then it has become a symbol of Wraiths football and is seen as one of the best mascots in North American sports. The Wraith is different from the other ISFL mascots because he is a conscious entity that is not alive. A ghost, phantom, or apparition if you will. Fans of Yellowknife enjoy traveling to the stadium with their own spin on the mascot. Every home game looks like Halloween evening. Fans dressed up like the Wraith call themselves “spookies”. During pre-game ceremonies at home games, the Wraiths entrance is equivalent to the Undertaker’s entrance before a wrestling match. All the light get turned off in the stadium, black light illuminates the smokey field, ominous music plays, and the first thing fans see come out of the tunnel is the actual Wraith. He walks to the center of the field, summons a lightning bolt from the sky, and then disappears. The Yellowknife roster charges out onto the field shortly after. (211 words)
