As the team name implies, the Kansas City Coyotes' mascot is a Coyote. For the mascots name, when the team was founded in Kansas City, the owner was insistent on getting fan approval and fan involvement. Thus, the team owner put the naming completely up to the fans. Quite a few unique and original (and unoriginal) names were submitted but after some preliminary voting on the teams website, the 2 names, Coy Ote and Howler were the two finalists up for voting. Howler was the more conventional but rather "normal" mascot name. On the other hand, Coy Ote, is a very unique but unconventional name. Many arguments stemmed from which name was better so the final vote was an extremely close one. With a total of 4 million votes, Coy Ote won by a mere 2 thousand votes. Other than the name being very unique, Coy Ote also partakes in some very unique game time rituals to get the fans riled up. The fan favorite is the 3rd down howl. Each time the opposing team has a 3rd down situation, Coy Ote jumps into the stands and alongside the fans howls to distract the opposing team. It has been quite effective as opposing teams' 3rd down conversion rates go down a considerable amount when they play in KCC.
