Perhaps the most important story in the short history of the NSFL, but one which is criminally overlooked, is the story of Ezekiel "Easy" Bishop. The Chicago born cornerback was seen as one of the most intelligent defensive backs available in the inaugural NSFL draft, and was selected by the Baltimore Hawks in the twentieth round. Bishop was seen as a project layer in many ways, possessing the frame required to be an elite corner, but not quite league-ready in terms of athleticism. It's not entirely clear why Bishop chose to retire before signing his rookie contract -- thus meaning he never took a single snap in the NSFL, and never dressed for a game, or even training camp -- though he was the first player to step away from the NSFL. In the months since, a league-wide scandal relating to performance enhancing drugs has been exposed, and one can only wonder if Bishop decided to walk away from the potential danger, even though it meant forgoing millions of dollars. Perhaps it was something else. Either way, his decision left many fans, executives, and fellow players alike all stunned. Some even speculated his departure may have been the first in a mass exodus of players from the league. The truth will never be known, as he never did clarify his reasons. One thing is certain about "Easy", though: he will forever remain a part of NSFL history, and despite his silence since, nobody can ever take that away from him.
