It’s my very first game as a head coach of my former high school football team. Well, actually it’s my very first game as a head coach. Or any kind of coach. Of any sport. Of course I’m nervous, but I’m also excited. Mostly nervous, as I’ve never pictured myself coaching in the future, or the now. We’re in the locker room, we’ve already finished warming up and we’re about to hit the field for our hometown fans. It’s dead quiet as everyone waits for me to say something. “Alright guys. Uh, let’s just, um. Let’s go out there and score more points than the other team!” The room erupts, for some reason. I can tell that I’m not cut out for this. Okay, it’s game time. The game goes better than I thought, to be honest. For the most part, I just let the offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator run the show. They know the team better than I do. I’m not even sure why one of them isn’t the interim head coach. I’m probably just a publicity stunt, oh well, this is fun. We’re down by 2 with just a handful of seconds remaining. We’re on the 20. That’s an easy enough field goal, right? It’s not a chip shot for a high schooler by any means, but still. I call for a field goal and the coaches and players grimace at me. “Coach, we may have forgot to tell you that we don’t have a field goal kicker on the team.” Uhhh what? I guess we’re chucking it then. Somehow, someway, we pull it off with a screen pass to our star running back. I’m going to have to make sure he’s a Butcher someday.
