Without a doubt, Honky-Tonk Haywood has a passion for music. It’s a defining characteristic of the big fella. So it may come as no wonder that HTH has partnered with Charity Music – whose mission is “to collect used instruments and refurbish them to give to children and other individuals.” Specifically, Haywood will be working with the charity to distribute instruments to Philadelphia youth, with an emphasis on country and blues-related instruments.
While Philadelphia is a vibrant and multifaceted city, Haywood has expressed concerns about the length of time he goes in hearing a fiddle or banjo since he left Nashville. When reached for comment, Honky Tonk Haywood was quoting as saying “hey man, if I can’t go home to hear some good southern tunes, then damnit I’ll bring them to Philly. I’ll get these kids a taste of what real music sounds like. Hmm…and while we’re talkin about taste, maybe I’ll find a charity for bbq smokers. Teach these kids how to make a brisket too.” Since the partnership, Haywood and the charity have provided 67 guitars, 45 amplifiers, 23 drum kits, 19 harmonicas, 14 fiddles, and 1 banjo to kids across the greater Philadelphia area. Haywood said he will not rest until a group of local classmates form a band and win a rock and roll or country battle of the bands.
