Unless they have combed through the index, most users who joined the league after Season 25 likely are not aware of the torrid history of the Chicago Butchers. Prior to making the playoffs that season the Butchers had frequently finished near the bottom of the standings, including multiple number one picks over that span. Even though I joined the team when the Butchers were on the upswing, most players on the team still associated the team’s period of ineptitude with one franchise-defining player—perhaps the worst quarterback to ever play in an ISFL game, Franky LaFleur. LaFleur is the most recent Butcher to play QB prior to veteran George O’Donnell, and he was signed as a replacement after the previous Butchers QB was traded. In his five games with the team, LaFleur had a completion percentage below 50% while throwing zero touchdowns and ten interceptions, and the team went winless during his tenure. While his statistics are certainly abysmal, still more people remember LaFleur for the fact that he had 50 TPE (a feat that is almost an impossibility under today’s ISFL rules). While most people would question building a statue of someone like LaFleur instead of Sean O’Leary, he is a catalyst for the team that reminds us all that we can always rise from the cellar of the league to be heavyweights.
