The Sarasota Sailfish are a young franchise, which helps keep the shortlist for deserving candidates very short. While there are a number of fantastic players who have retired after coming through the organization, the honor of a stadium statue goes to the Season 27 General Managers of the Year duo who led the team to their first Ultimus trophy: Baxter Frost Sr. (@Frostbite) and Edmund ‘Mundl’ Sackbauer (@sakrosankt). These GMs have done so much more for the franchise than simply bringing home a title; they have been instrumental in building a culture of excellence on the field and kindness, good humor, and community spirit off of the field. They have drafted a family of players who work together to make the playoffs season after season. And they serve as role models outside the locker room, defining what it means for their players to wear the Sailfish uniform and contribute to the league. They know how to win *and* how to have a great time doing it.
Their accomplishments clearly merit their immortalization as the stadium statue. But my other reason for nominating them is that their unique personalities and somewhat disheveled appearances will make for a fun and dynamic statue. One could easily imagine Baxter Frost Sr., cast in bronze, riding on the back of a giant sailfish with Mundl Sackbauer trying to real in the fish, with greying hair and mustache blowing in the breeze, sweat dripping down his forehead with the effort.
