With just a week to go until the head honchos and their motley crews gather in their man caves and start a secretive draft, we the public shall only hear about five days later it is also the time for prospects with high aspirations to shine on the brightest stage there is; the media section. You see, prospects are all big diamonds in the rough and the top targets are all within a handful of TPE from one another. What these General Managers want is the followers and media attention that these players bring to the table, in order to grow their fanbase and sell more merchandise. And at this game, no one in the upcoming draft class is a bigger attention grabber (and seeker) than Nick L. Back.
The Canadian Tight End, born from Swedish parents and unfortunately named after a semi-successful band, has made a name for himself in the DSFL this past season, playing for the Norfolk Seawolves. Although listed as a Tight End, he has primarily played this past season as a Wide Receiver due to being the team’s top receiver period. With one game to go in the season, he ranks 9th in receiving yards, 11th in average yards, and t-6th in touchdowns on what is a young rebuilding team. All good stats. But off the field he brings an altogether different set of skills.
A loud mouth with a severe case of over-inflated ego, Back has often been spotted out partying in the various cities they play in, more often than not past curfew. A couple of times, the police had to ‘escort’ him back to the team hotel. With the Seawolves heading to Tijuana for Week 14, who knows what shenanigans will ensue and where Back will be found in the morning.
So what does Nick L. Back bring to a team? Here is a quick list:
- A ton of media attention to the team in question. You need to be in the papers? You will be in the papers with him on your team.
- A great musical background. Back has made it his mission to rewrite and improve the songs of his namesake, even though he cannot sing well himself.
- A massive ego. We said it before and we’ll say it again, the man is so full of himself he might pop like a balloon at any time. In one of the point tasks he told the media that the Seawolves should already build a statue of him as he’s their star of the present. Talk about narcissism.
- Potential controversy. It’s not his fault that lil Timmy’s mom had it going on. Surprising the kid was cool and all but getting drunk and hitting on everyone (some might even say ‘everything’) is there. Like we said earlier… papers.
- Leather. Look, we know every team has a bunch of unsold leather vests in the back that they just want to get rid of one way or another. Come in Back with his bleached blond hair and chin beard. Say what you will but he makes leather look good. That embroidered merch you want to get rid of will disappear like hotcakes with him on the team.
- Intangibles. The man himself compares his lifestyle choices as “just like The Dude” (The Big Lebowski) and that he abides by that. But that’s just his opinion man.
- His agent. Managed by Hall of Famer, Alexandre LeClair, Back has been led down a path to glory by someone who has been there and done that before. He knows what it takes to win it all and be a household name in this league.
As of now, it has been reported that several teams have been in contact with Back and his agent. However, he has made it known that he isn’t happy that not all teams have contacted him as of yet. Using the same tactic that the pair employed ahead of the DSFL draft, LeClair said,
“We will not consider signing for any team that drafts Nick without contacting us prior to the draft.”
The ISFL draft starts on July 3 and the results will be presented live on July 8.
