Press Release: Norfolk, Bondi Beach Will Team Up in Japan
The Norfolk Seawolves
are delighted to partner with the Bondi Beach Buccaneers
to lead a series of youth football camps in Japan this offseason. American football is rapidly growing in popularity in Japan, and the country has been suggested as a prime location for a future DSFL/ISFL expansion franchise, with Tokyo or Osaka being the most likely host cities. On account of their geographical proximity, Bondi Beach has taken a leading role in driving growth of the sport in Japan in recent years. In response to rising interest in their offseason football camps there, the Buccaneers have invited us to join them in promoting the sport in Japan by teaching football skills to Japanese youth, and we are happy to accept.
Both teams will be sending their rookie draft classes, select veteran players, and members of the respective coaching staffs to spend two weeks in Japan promoting and teaching the sport of American football there. Besides driving international interest in the sport, this trip will also give our rookie classes an opportunity to bond as teammates or friendly rivals through experiencing a new country and culture together. Over these two weeks, the DSFL players and coaches will be partnering with players and coaches from Japan’s top college programs and the semi-professional X-League to lead football camps and hold skills competitions in four Japanese cities: Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Kobe. The DSFL rookies from Norfolk and Bondi will also be participating in joint OTAs and in exhibition scrimmages against X-League players to condition and prepare for the upcoming season. (We expect they will also find plenty of time to explore, relax, and enjoy themselves before the grind of the regular season sets in!)
The Buccaneers inform us that leading the Japan camps has been a major highlight of their past several offseasons, and Norfolk is delighted and honored to be their guests this year.
