In order to expand our international appeal, the San Jose Sabercats sent me to Africa for a multi country trip. The first country I visited was the wonderful island nation of Cape Verde. There I had a clinic to introduce the game of football and teach the kids that attended the basics. It was a fun time trying to teach the children of the island how to properly throw, kick and catch the ball. Next up was a trip to the main land where I visited the lovely country of Nigeria. The Nigerian clinic was different as it was held to help support local coaches that work in the youth leagues that have taken hold in the country. At this clinic, I helped coaches learn the xs and os of the game and learn more in depth strategies for the game of football. These coaches are so important for the future of the game in Nigeria, so working with them felt so important and I enjoyed my time with them immensely.
My final stop was in the country of South Africa, where I helped officiate an pass, punt and kick competition. It was amazing to see so many young girls and boys come out and compete in a competition to a sport that they may have never previously heard of. The competition was fierce and I hope all those young people consider how they can make the ISFL in the future as I would love to see our game grow into a new market and embrace international players.
