In the SHL when you are drafted by an SMJHL (DSFL) team you can sign for max 1 year for max $3M. Then when your SMJHL year is done you are in the SHL draft and are drafted by an SHL team. Then you sign a contract with the SHL team and they will send you down to SMJHL because you aren't good enough to make the main squad yet. I think the SMJHL teams then claim you on waivers, but the contract is set.
@Ballerstorm does that sound right? I'm new to the SHL but this is how I understand it.
