For any team, creating a "Mount Rushmore" is challenging and the San Jose Sabercats are not any different. A team that has been around for so many seasons has the options of many key players and staff that could be honored. For simplicities sake, I am just going to focus on former Sabercat players in the construction of my monument.
The first player I would like to honor is Tyron Brackenridge. Lovingly known as "Old man Brack" before his retirement, Brackenridge is the all time leader in games played for the San Jose Sabercats and it is not particularly close. He has 20 more games played than the next closest cats. Brack didn't just play in those games, he was extremely productive. Most notable is the fact that he is second all time for San Jose in tackles having amassed over 1000 in his illustrious career. Brackenridge further finds himself in the all-time top ten for sacks, interceptions and passes defended. Brackenridge was just dominant in every season he played in the ISFL and his on-field performance warrants his inclusion among the elite of San Jose.
Brack's contributions don't end on the field however. He was arguably a bigger presence within the locker room in San Jose. He was beloved by all his teammates and is a former captain of the team. He helped guide the Sabercats defense to two ultimus titles and kept a struggling team together in the later years of his career. Brackenridge will forever be remembered as not just a dominant football player, but as a leader of men.
The next player I would like to honor is none other than Shane Weston. Weston is without a doubt the best wide receiver to ever play for San Jose. His numbers just seem ridiculous when you compare them to other Sabercats. For starters, he has almost three thousand more yards than the next closest cat with his over ten thousand yards. His 668 catches is also 150 more than any player in the history of the team. The fact Weston compiled these numbers while averaging over 16 yards a catch just makes his career all the more impressive. Weston's numbers did not just stop on the offensive side of the ball, as he was a dominant return man. He leads San Jose all time in punt return yards and touchdowns and kick return yards. The 5 touchdowns he has returning punts is still 4 more than any other member of the team. Combined, these impressive stats set Weston way ahead of any other plan in total all purpose yards. He is over 21,000 all purpose yards with the next closest being almost 7,000 behind. The numbers Weston put up are frankly ridiculous and may not ever be matched by another Sabercat.
The third player I would like to honor is Dan Miller. I feel Miller is a player that is underappreciated in terms of just how dominant he was. For starters, he only played 7 seasons and 92 games, but the man racked up 101 sacks. That's right the man averaged over a sack a game for his whole tenure with the cats. Overall he is 18 sacks higher than the closer player, who played in nearly twice the games. Miller also had success outside of pass rushing with almost 400 tackles and 9 forced fumbles in his career. I think this is just one dude who had a dominant career from a less sexy position but still deserves his face up on the San Jose Mount Rushmore.
The final player I want to select is none other than the legendary Monty Jack. Jack is a player you can't avoid talking about when you look at Sabercat history. He is the all time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns. He has an almost 10,000 yard lead over the next closest QB, or 1 Shane Weston career, and 20 touchdowns. He was a dominant force in the league for a few years and deserves his face on the pantheon. Oh did I mention that he won back to back Ultimus championships? That's right this man was the leader behind the greatest period in San Jose history. So not only is he a clear admission into my monument by stats, but he is also one of the main reasons the Cats have two of their championship rings. I think any fan would agree that Monty Jack is truly in a class of his own. Put more simply, the cheese stands alone.
I want to give a special shout out to Jamar Lackson. There is no doubt Lack is a top 4 player all time for San Jose. However, his story has not yet come to an end. He still has some gas left in the tank and I do not want to honor him prematurely. I am excited to see how the book ends with Lackson's career and ever sabercats fan feels the same I am sure. Hopefully the team can put together one last big run while Jamar is on the team. It would be a proper sendoff to see Lackson's final game be in the playoffs.
