Talking about mental health, especially in the world of International Simulation Football, is always a difficult thing to do. For the most part the people who struggle with it have a tough time bringing it up in the locker room due to the overwhelming stigma that to be a football player you have to be super macho all the time. In my recent struggles, I've noticed that the talk it out room in the Ducks locker room is a very warm and accepting place that allows any of our players or alumni to share openly about the struggles going on in their players life, or even in real life. While I haven't reached out yet, I have definitely taken notice of the way that others have, and even chimed in if I felt I had something helpful to add, and I truly believe that this would be a great place to seek some support.
However, sometimes simply talking to your peers about mental health issues is not quite enough. In these instances, its helpful to reach out to a trained professional. I find myself thinking that this might be the best option for me. This way, I have more privacy in what and when I get to share, and I can know that any advice I may receive is from a trained counselor who has my own development and growth as their professional goal. Currently, I'm coming off the best game of my career, and honestly it was one of the all-time performances in league history I think, and yet I still feel a little hollow. Now that the adrenaline has worn off, I feel like that type of performance will probably never happen again and it leaves me a little bummed out. Its revealed a pretty big validation hole in me that I realize needs to be filled, and unfortunately I'm not sure that sim football is going to be able to fill it! I'll be reaching out to a league affiliated/recommended counselor who can help me work through these issues ASAP.
