Chidubem Okonkwo didn't play during season 1. He was drafted by the San Jose Sabercats in the 6th round of the season 2 draft. He plays defensive end with the power rusher archetype.
I believe that he is the most improved player because during the first few games, he had some impact, but wasn't standing out compared to the other rookie. All 2 of defensive line rookies including Okonkwo would pick up a few sacks or plays here and there but nothing game breaking.
Towards the end of this season he has really stepped up his game.
To elaborate on this, I'll show what veteran Defensive lineman "Dan Miller" has done this year and compare it to Okonkwo.
Dan has 34 tackles, 1 TFL and 9 sacks. Done a decent job at stopping the run at the line and pressuring the QB this season. The expecation was a better perfomance. He doesn't slip past the line to tackle for loss, but stopping a run after 1 yard is effective.
Okonkwo on the other hand has 29 tackles, 9 Tackle for losses and 6 sacks.
He is definitely making plays and this stat line is pretty damn good for a first year especially when comparing it to a "veteran". Either way, the defensive line on this sabercat team has really proven that Okonkwo knows what to do and how to pressure. He handles outside runs easily stopping them before they get started. On passing downs, you can see the offensive line end up being splintered between the attack of Okonkwo and Miller.
If you go back and look at his early games, a glimmer of promise stands out. If you watch him play now, you will see a play maker for years to come.
