Good Evening and welcome back to another riveting edition of nobody's favorite publication According to My Calculations. Last time we analyzed something that I don't remember because it was so long ago. I'm sure it was wonderful. Today we're going to take a look at what week-to-week consistency looks like for players in the NSFL. I plan to make this a series that looks at consistency for several different position groups. So don't steal my idea.
Today we start off this series on consistency by analyzing the consistency of Wide Receivers in the NSFL through week 13. As per custom we must open with a table:

What we are looking at here is all wide receivers who have accumulated at least 300 yards so far this season (more on that later) and how they compare on several stat categories. First, we have receiving yards, which goes without explanation. Then we have their YPA which is Yards / (catches + drops). Next up we calculate the standard deviation of these two stats. I won't define a standard deviation for you, google it, it's basically a measure of consistency. The smaller the standard deviation the more consistent the stat is. The reason why I chose only wide receivers with at least 300 yards is because someone who has 0 receiving yards every single game is the most consistent. I, Angus Winchester, literally am more consistent in receiving yards than any actual WR, so that's why I require some actual damn performance. Oh, you also have to have been here since game 1 this season.
I would also like to note that being inconsistent game to game isn't a bad thing, AJ Green is constantly one of the most inconsistent receivers in the NFL game-to-game, but is an excellent player. I just wanted to look at it.
Now that that stuff is out of the way, let's look at the actual numbers. One thing is definitely clear, the players with fewer yards this season are slightly more consistent than those with higher total yards. This makes sense. YPA however does not share that trend, this also makes sense.
The most consistent receivers in yards/game are C.A. Chess, Jon Ross, Mayran Jackson, and Johnny Rocket. Jackson is the only one in this group however to perform consistently while also posting good overall numbers for the season. Conclusion: Mayran Jackson is a solid performer in yards every week.
The most consistent receivers in terms of YPA/Game are Bailey Cook, Damien Kroetch, Matthew Vincent, and Dustin Evans. Bailey Cook being the only of this group to put up solid overall stats while also showing to be the most consistent player in terms of overall efficiency in the passing game this season.
What about the least consistent performers? In yards/game: Dustin Evans (who was one of the most consistent in YPA), Darren Smallwood, Alexander LeClair & Bradley Westfield. These players proved to be more boom or bust in overall yards per game this season. It is interesting to see Stormblessed not make this list as he is a huge deep threat, but that usually makes someone less consistent game to game.
For YPA/game consistency the worst are Johnny Rocket, C.A. Chess (again, two of the most consistent in yards/game), Stormblessed (there he is!), DJ Law, and Kendrick Hendrix.
And just for fun (because of our results) I ran a correlation between both measures of consistency, which is probably breaking some rule of statistics, but I'm a rebel like that. I found that there is a negative correlation of -0.20 between the two measures. I guess you could say that being more consistent in yards results in less consistent in efficiency....but I'm calling it noise.
Anyways that concludes this segment of According to My Calculations stay tuned for next time when I analyze someone else!
