While the Sarasota Sailfish have developed a minor reputation for underperforming at the starts of seasons, the start to this season feels worse than normal. We lost our first 3 games of the season, which is definitely our longest season-starting losing streak during my time with the team and likely during all of franchise history. We had a small rally to 2-3 but then lost dramatically to the Arizona Outlaws, who were likely seeking revenge for our win over them in the S30 Ultimus. The Sailfish currently sit at a 2-4 record as the halfway point of the season fast approaches, and our playoff streak, the longest active streak of any team in the league, feels in danger of getting snapped. Is this the end of the Sailfish "dynasty" ?
While it can definitely feel like the bottom has fallen out, there are definitely signs of promise for the team and I think it's too early to write us out of the playoff hunt or even championship contention completely. The NSFC, as always it feels like, has a lot of teams bunched near each other and not much clear separation of teams. The top 3 teams in the conference are all tied at 4-2, still within striking distance of our record. Additionally, we have demonstrated the potential to compete with this top tier as we beat the Berlin Fire Salamanders at home without much trouble. While we are in a 4-way tie at 2-4, the Sailfish have the most points scored and fewest points against of any 2-4 team in the NSFC, so if one of these teams were to emerge it would most likely be us. Here's hoping we can pull it off and continue the streak!
