The vast majority of kids in Baltimore city have never seen a real night sky. Like most major metropolitan areas, light pollution wasn't much of a concern for the developers of the city's street light system. As both a local and a neophyte photographer, Wraiths linebacker AC Hackett was keenly aware of the magnitude of the city's light pollution problem. Long on awareness, Hackett was equally short on solutions, after all, he couldn't singlehandedly replace every light bulb in the city.
It wasn't until he got to Yellowknife that he released what made sense to do. Being in the middle of nowhere, the province that houses Yellowknife has some of the darkest skies in the western hemisphere. Even though he was unable to solve the root cause, AC figured he could at least give some kids the chance to see a real night sky. With financial backing from the team, Hackett set-up a lottery where honor roll students from the city's Title 1 schools could win the chance to be flown to Yellowknife for an overnight visit. Beyond just giving the kids a chance to see a dark sky, they also get an opportunity to meet NSFL superstars like Josh Garden, Bailey Cook, Chris Orosz and Dermot Lavelle, and, for many of them, the program is also there first chance to travel outside of the United States.
