As for why retire at all, there were different reasons for different people. Many grew disillusioned with the league and found (some sub-sect of) the memberbase toxic; some were turned off by the constant drama, scandals, and witch hunts; most were bored or simply didn't care anymore - for any number of reasons. IH has and is making it clear in discord that this was several seasons coming for him stemming from the foundation of the league. Perhaps other people will explain their reasons but I find it unlikely since I got the impression it was mostly some combination of being bored and not enjoying the league.
The irony of the league's reaction to this is not lost on me.
