(S33) PT 2 - Mentors

My personal mentor was @IceBear32 and he has definitely helped me get to where I am today.  I still remember our first scouting conversation we had when I was about to be taken in the DSFL draft ( I literally answered every question with GIFs).  Ever since the moment Minnesota took me in round 2, Bear (and Painted as well) were there to help answer questions about posting on the site, how to best build my player, and how to get more involved in the league.  He brought me into the Warroom for season 2, made me a captain, and even let me take over the twitter which might have been a little foolish on his part to be honest.  Since then, he spoke highly enough for me in the HON locker room that he convinced the War room to trade up to grab me in the 1st round and has continued to help me as I've made my transition to the big leagues.  Thanks Icebear!

I don't know if it really mentor level but someone who definitely helped me get to the stage I am at right now is Amid from the Austin Copperheads. After I got drafted into the DSFL, I was not sure where I was going to be drafted into the ISFL. After getting picked in the third round by the Copperheads, Amid was and still has been the person to help me whenever I am looking for anything related to the league or when I need help with part of my build. He showed me that just being a helpful GM or now as a teammate, it can go a long way especially for someone like me who has no idea what they were doing joining this league. Have to give another shoutout in here as well for Negs as my DSFL GM when I first created, he was always helping me day after day with any questions I had as a new person in the league.

Without a doubt the person most responsible for me having any idea what I’m doing here is my GM, Pat.  I know I’m a bit older than a lot of the people here, and this is my first sim-league experience, so I was definitely behind the 8 ball when I joined.  Pat has been accommodating with all of my questions, has helped me with my build, assisted in correcting TPE/bank issues, and most importantly encouraged me to interact the way I’m comfortable (which is sparingly) while still keeping me in the loop.  I think it’s people like him that keep other people involved in the locker room and recreating players.  I’d also have to shout out qWest, who was the GM of the Pythons when I joined.  He was essentially my Pat before I knew who Pat was.  Although I was more shy in the DSFL days, the few questions I was comfortable asking were directed at qWest, who was always accommodating.  He even created my sig that I still use today! Thanks guys!

This is something I have wanted to talk about for a while now. When I first joined the league, the first people to speak to me were @Painted. He is a great guy, but I also can't forget about @IceBear32. Both of them have helped me through this journey and helped me get used to talking to the guys in the chat. I love hanging with them, and @Painted more than @IceBear32, have put up with my sh*t up til now. I am amazed by what both of them do for the team week-in and week-out, just a great job. I look up to them, and they have made me want to be a GM in the future. Love to see them talking in the chat and keeping everyone active as well as helping and instructing all the players on how to learn the league and other things. They are more about being friends with you more than your coach. They have made me who I am.

Saleem Spence didn't necessarily have traditional mentors growing up. He had his share of coaches telling him the tricks to the trade, but being an outsider in both the ISFL and DSFL drafts, he wasn't seen as important enough to have a traditional mentor like top players have nowadays, usually in the forms of retired professionals teaching the rookie good habits that are needed to become stars.

But Spence did gain mentors of sorts once he started playing professionally. As the second option for Portland, Saleem was mentored by the veteran 1st string receiver Quavious McGrady, who taught him the little fundamentals, and helped him harness more of his athletic talent. Then, upon moving to Sarasota, Spence got some mentoring courtesy of Tre'Darius J'Vathon, the star number 1 receiver for Sarasota at the time. J'Vathon taught Spence in a way that helped complement each other's strengths and weaknesses, aiding Spence with his hands and physical power. The 1-2 punch worked fairly well for Spence's first season, leading to him winning a surprise Rookie of the Year award.
