Week 3 Thoughts
Another road game in Palm Beach to cap off our 3 game road trip. We’ve had a tough schedule so far and I think it’s really wearing on the new guys. Training 4 days a week and then traveling to new cities to play is really taking its’ toll on some of the guys, but I’m still optimistic we’ll pull out our first win. Roenick doesn’t seem to be phased at all by the training and scheduling and he’s been quite the locker room leader for us. I haven’t talked much with some of the other guys, but I can tell Bobby is quite the character. I’ve never heard so many curse words out of someone’s mouth in a regular conversation before. I mean, this guy curses…a lot but he’s really fun to be around. Aaron, Storm, and McPoyal are constantly in the offices working the wide receiver coaches and offensive coordinators all the time so I don’t get to interact with them too much since we split our own time with our own defensive coaches.
Heading to face another bot team, we weren’t in high spirits considering how we lost to Norfolk. These bots are fast and they don’t feel pain despite what the NSFL officials told us. I think their pain tolerance setting is turned off or something because I don’t think any of our hits phased them at all. The Solar Bears are a relocated franchise and I absolutely love their new branding. It’s pretty funny if you ask me. We started off this game with Roenick getting tackled for a safety and it looked nasty too. He got up immediately though and shook it off like he was ready to play the next snap. The offense found some ground and I think the extra time after practice for Gore is working out well. He and Goose both ended scoring back to back drives to put us up 17-2, but our defense struggled to stop them towards the end of the second quarter.
Not much action happened in the third quarter on our end. I swear these bots are overpowered! They were great at reading our offense throughout the second half of the game and had impeccable timing on everything. The offense just couldn’t get anything off. After a Terrelle Pryor touchdown the Solar Bears were up 17-16 and within scoring distance a few things to put them over. We had to really trick them by switching up our defensive schemes and giving different looks to confuse the bots in the fourth quarter. This worked out well and Gore got another rushing touchdown to put us up 24-16. After that score, I was able to stop Payton on the last drive on 2nd and 10 to stop their drive and we walked out of Palm Beach with our first victory. It’s always great to win on the road, but even better against newly engineered robots. Those guys are tough as steel (or whatever they’re built out of). I did really well this game with 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 2 sacks. I’m really proud of how our offense played. I mean, Winter got 6 tackles and 3 pass deflections while Ruckus had 5 tackles, 1 pass deflection, and 1 interception. I think those Skype sessions with Taylor are really paying off even though they can’t work out together.
So yeah, slowly but surely we are getting better. We’re heading into week 4 with a home game and I’m excited to see how we do against the new look Luchadores. Win 1 on the books Portland!
