Just two games remain in the season for the Kansas City Coyotes, and for most of the team and their fans the end can't come soon enough. This season has been what you could safely call a tire fire, a shit show, a hot mess, a gigantic fuck up or any other phrase that comes to mind, and despite some of the big names in the Coyotes team, the results just haven't been there for and after a slow start their season fell into the mess we've seen over the last few weeks. Despite the obvious talent and star potential of players like their first overall QB Borkus Maximus, tight end Poopyface Tomatonose, linebacker Jack Dwyer and kicker Micycle McCormick, the team has not been able to get it going, the main reason being perhaps their protection from their offensive line being by far and away the worst in the league. Whatever is the root problem however, the work of new GM Azhek Ahriman who took over in the last couple of games and although was unable to deliver wins, has the team playing a much better style of football, with the defensive plays in particular looking a lot stronger and capable of holding teams to low point totals (although the offense still has some way to go to overcome the obvious OL weakness). Another bright light this season for the Coyotes has been the play of rookie defensive end Cordell Joshua, who came in with a chip on his shoulder after missing the DSFL draft and being a waiver claim. Given the role of being an anchor on the D line who can make plays and pressure offenses, Joshua has thrived in beating his opposition through a mix of speed and strength, and getting to ball carrier in the backfield. He hasn't exactly been a sack machine in the Coyotes system, but the coaches decision to utilize his skills at stopping the run has proved to be a good one, has Cordell so far this season has come through with 16 tackles for loss, 5 higher than his closest opposition. Delivering strong statistics also in terms of sacks and tackles, with the season winding down and no chance of playoff football on the horizon for the Coyotes, Joshua is turning his attention to what recognition his achievements might earn him. Based on statistics, primarily his tackles for loss stat, the fact he is among the league's best defensive ends in terms of sack numbers, and the fact he is the only DE to have picked up a safety this season, Joshua should be in the discussion to be a part of the DSFL Pro Bowl, an honor that would be a huge boost to the confidence of a young player. He is also a name that might be a feature on the ballot for the DSFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year, and although it's a bit of a stretch, he could be included as a potential candidate for the Defensive Player of the Year award, although that might be a bridge too far unless he can drastically improve his sack totals in the last two games of the season.
But more important for Joshua than the prospect of any individual awards or acknowledgement is the ever approaching S6 NSFL Draft, which he will be a part of. Joshua needs to be doing whatever he can to keep his name up there in the discussion for a first round pick, and give GMs the impression that he is the kind of player who can make their franchise better from the day he joins. With a lot of teams having glaring holes on their defensive line, there are quite a few possible landing spots for Joshua, but exactly where a team could look to select him remains to be seen. If between now and then he delivers an impeccable performance both on the field, and matches up with the needs of the teams with those early picks, he could be a potential choice during the earlier picks of the first round of the draft, but the dependence on positional need for determining where a player will be drafted means he can't have any sort of expectation about how things will shake out.
Speaking on the subject, Joshua said "This has been a really good season for me, it's sucked that we haven't been able to win games and deliver the results but sometimes that happens and it's not through the fault of the guys on the team. It's been cool to have a strong rookie season individually and I'm proud of what I've done out there. It would be nice to be recognized by the fans or the league itself for what I've managed to do, but if that doesn't happen I'm just gonna have to go out there and grind twice as hard next season".
