Two and a half seasons ago I looked into active players within the league and the possibility of expansion. You can find it here http://nsfl.jcink.net/index.php?showtopic=6931&hl=actives
If you don’t want to go back and read it, the short version is that I did some quick maths and came to the figure of 160 active players before expansion was a real immediate conversation, plus a class of players to go along with it. The ultimate conclusion I made was that there were 107 active and semi-active NSFL players and 31 active in the DSFL at the time, plus 3 who had signed up but were not on teams yet.
So why are we here? Well, the obvious reasons. I want to take an updated look, get paid for it in media, and naturally, as an HO member, sway you all to my side in nefarious fashion. Giddy up. Now, a few things have changed since then. We’re much closer to regression and the wave of recreates that’s coming for starters. The DSFL system has gotten stronger, and several inactives have actually retired to create room for new players and/or recreate themselves. Also, and I can’t stress this enough, even though we’re a lot closer to Easter now you still shouldn’t eat the eggs. In addition to offering the same advice I will be using the same methodology. This time I’ll be cutting out some of the reference to side jobs and instead I’ll be comparing teams now to what they were then.
BALTIMORE HAWKS
13 Active members. 11 who were updated this week, 1 GM who missed this past week but is near cap anyway, and 1 player who was not updated but who has current points going on in the background, including an activity check in the past week. So about the same it would seem for the Hawks, who had 13 last time. They also have a 14th player who is currently inactive but is so due to outside issues.
COLORADO YETI
The Yeti are a tad more complicated. 10 updates for the week, plus a GM who just didn’t update, plus 2 semi-actives, plus 3 who aren’t active this moment but are highly likely to return with more updates in the next few weeks. We’ll assume the worst and that all three stay away and only count 13. Still an improvement over the 12 that the Yeti had before.
PHILADELPHIA LIBERTY
We start with 7 active updated players for this week. We have 5 more who lurk the site and update occasionally. 2 others are currently gone for different reasons, but are likely to come back. As before, we’ll count everyone but the last two. 12. The Liberty are the first team to actually lose actives, with the preceding being 14. A fair amount of that is just timing and circumstance, however. Well, that and of course the myriad of conspiracy theories perpetuated by the HO to affect only the Philadelphia Liberty. We even hired the GM to HO to convert him into the cult.
YELLOWKNIFE WRAITHS
Only 9 players updated this week. 4 More didn’t but are clearly active. One of them is the Commissioner for example. So 13 is the number here for the presumptive NSFC Champion. That brings the NSFC’s total to 51, down slightly from when last we checked in.
ARIZONA OUTLAWS
4 updates this week. Seems low but doesn’t take into account both GMs, 4 semi-actives and 1 retiring player who has a DSFL player. He and anyone else of that nature will be counted among the DSFL.So we’re calling it 10. A downgrade form the 14 they had before but not an unexpected one for the team that is in the midst of a several season long rebuild.
NEW ORLEANS SECOND LINE
This team didn’t even exist last time, but the Legion boasted 10 in the midst of their horror show of shitfuckery that was in the process of being turned around at that moment. We’ve got 8 updates this week for the team. Counting a few busy but active players, you get 10. A seemingly lateral move for the team on the surface, but it is a much deeper and stronger 10 than the previous.
ORANGE COUNTY OTTERS
Currently they have 6 players who updated this past week. Not a shock for a team that is full of people who can afford to update every so often while they keep creating TPE for themselves in the background. Add those folks to the semi-actives and you get 8 more players for a total of 15. Matching their previous.
SAN JOSE SABERCATS
This week saw 8 updated players. Add that to 3 actives who didn’t and 2 additional semi-actives. 13 is your total. Not a shock for one of the most season 1 heavy teams in the league. That makes it 48 for the ASFC, and 99 for the NSFL itself. Both slight drops from December.
DSFL
Now let’s look at the DSFL, who graded out last time at 34. 10 of whom were recreates. This time the answer is 34 plus 1 who hasn’t been assigned a team yet for a total of 35. Only 1 of which is a recreate.
So what does this mean? Are we about to go down in flames and die as a league? No. Are we treading water? Yes, a bit. Should we expand right this moment? Not even a little bit. We’re in a holding position right now in the middle of the season. I see the trend being upward from here. Either way, this is where we are right now as a league. Now pay me my money.
