With the NSFL draft just around the corner, mock drafts are coming in fast and furious for what has to be one of the best draft classes in the league in a while. One prospect that is a bit of a mystery is Tijuana Luchadores fullback Achilles Hondo. Hondo came into the DSFL with a bang. The big talking, absolute workout beast ended up being taken second overall in the DSFL draft just a season ago. But, while the Luchadores ended up winning the Ultimini for a second straight season, it’s hard to tell if Hondo really made all that much of an impact. His rushing and receiving numbers were rather pedestrian, especially for a player that lined up as the primary tight end in quite a few formations for the team. But, even as a blocker, Hondo didn’t seem to make a huge difference. In terms of blocking statistics, his pancake and sacks allowed numbers weren’t better than some of the other DSFL rookies and even though he was brought in to boost the Tijuana running game, their total yards and average were pretty low compared to the rest of the league.
As a fullback, Hondo’s profile really only matches a few players in NSFL history, and those players had moderate success at best at the position. The trouble for Hondo may be that teams would rather invest in players that they know for sure what they will bring to the team rather than the unknown of a fullback. Though his raw athleticism and work ethic jump off the page, if those don’t translate into results, it’s hard to see a team investing such a high pick in Hondo as when he was selected in the DSFL draft, especially with some excellent defensive talent in the draft as well. It is possible a team could take a gamble on Hondo and ask him to change positions to a position of greater need, but again moves like that have not necessarily panned out in the past and Hondo may not even be willing to make such a dramatic change.
Even if Hondo does develop well and a team gameplans around having a fullback, it’s still impossible to know just what kind of impact Hondo can make. He plays an extremely niche role in the offense and even though he can line up as a tight end, his ceiling at that position is extremely limited, especially since we have seen teams play plenty of wide receivers in that role with no problems. It is almost for certain that Hondo will not be going second overall again in the NSFL draft. There is a lot less room for taking chances and experimenting than there is in the DSFL, but it is possible that one of the teams drafting later in the first round with a more solidified roster would be able to take on a risk like that for the potential upside that Hondo can bring. What we do know for sure is regardless of where he lands, Hondo will be an extremely hard worker and a leader for the team. He brings an intensity to every game and if there was ever a player to finally break into the league as a fullback, he certainly has the right mentality to do so.
Another interesting fullback prospect in this class is Seer Zephyrous. With an eclectic name as well, you have to imagine he provides some immense upside and though he hasn’t been in the league as long as Hondo to make a name for himself, his agent has a solid history for representing fantastic players. For teams that may be a little gun shy about taking Hondo so early, Zephyrous represents what could be a huge steal in this draft. If he and Hondo can both live up to their potentials, these two fullbacks may be able to change the game in a way that no player has done before, or they may just fall flat on their faces as the other fullbacks have that have come before them. We’ll just have to see what the league thinks about these two when the draft happens in just a few days.
