Last season, former Tijuana CB and current co-GM for the Luchadores Mithrandir wrote a recap of our S22 draft class, and we collectively decided that each active member of the class should write a new recap every season. In their inaugural season, the Luchadores went just 6-8, a disappointing performance for a promising team, but had an excellent draft to offset their losses to the NSFL. In their next season, despite many callups, the Luchadores went 10-4 en route to an Ultimini victory, anchored by a few veterans and a strong S23 draft class. I will apologize in advance for the repetition, and in case there was anything I missed, the write-ups feel small enough to me as is. If there’s something I forgot, just know it wasn’t intentional! Here’s a review of every player that has been active at some point (that I can remember) from Tijuana’s S22 rookie class.
4OA: Ben Slothlisberger, QB, NOLA (sent down).
Key Stats: 170/271 (62.7%), 1797 yards, 6 TDs, 9 Ints, 75.5 QBR. 17OA in the S22 NSFL Draft. 1 S22 Game Ball.
Slothlisberger led the Luchadores to their Ultimini win over the Royals as their 1A option at QB, improving on his completion percentage, touchdown totals, and passing yardage in the process. His 9 interceptions were more than double the previous seasons, but he otherwise performed well after the loss of star receiver Thomas Passman. His completion percentage led all DSFL QBs as he developed in more of a game manager role to help facilitate the improvement of their rushing attack. Off the field Slothlisberger has remained very active in the locker room, even if the cigarette smoke can be uncomfortable at times for teammates. He’s also a Tijuana captain, making him an excellent 1st round pick.
28OA: Andrew Witten, CB, NOLA (called up).
Key Stats: 62 tackles, 1 FR, 5 sacks, 3 PDs. 12OA in the S22 NSFL Draft.
Witten was called up to play at strong safety for NOLA in his rookie season, and performed well for his low TPE levels. The pick was a surprise to some, as many assumed they’d be taking Slothlisberger at the end of the 1st. Witten wasn’t quite a household name in a stacked CB class, but his consistent and quality media production elevated him above the rest. He may have been playing for NOLA, but his impact in Tijuana was still invaluable. He was the first and only Lucho in the Tijuana war room (having been edged out by S21 linebacker Ugarth the Dissector in captain voting), but served as head scout and helped the GMs with sim testing. After the season he was appointed co-GM to replace Bagel, a well-deserved promotion, even if he is prone to using the wrong type of ghost in chains. He’s been making an impact off the field for NOLA as well, as he was elected to the awards committee to serve as their representative. Having been on the committee for Arizona I can confidently say that he was the most active team rep, consistently offering input for every award with plenty of research to back it up. Most importantly, he’s part of the Buffalo -> Tijuana Prospect Bowl pipeline, as one of three Luchadores players on the undefeated Ramblers prospect bowl team. He’s been an excellent value for the 28th pick, even if we’re still waiting on that first interception.
29OA: Ozmataz Buckshank, CB, Retired.
Key Stats: 34 tackles, 1 Int, 16 PDs. 97OA in the S22 NSFL Draft.
Buckshank played well for the Luchadores as their #1 CB, consistently locking down opposing teams’ WRs. He hasn’t been very active in the locker room, but still showed up from time to time to check in on things. After on-and-off activity due to being busy IRL, he opted to retire and look for a fresh start.
36OA: Thomas Passman, WR, ARI (called up)
Key Stats: 51 catches, 539 yards, 3 TDs. 44OA in the S22 NSFL Draft.
As a rookie for the Outlaws, Passman made an immediate impact as their WR3. He was a consistent option moving the chains, and has been a steady earner thus far. He hasn’t been the most active in the LR, but still checks in on both of his team’s to see how the season’s been going. He’s consistently looking for fantasy advice, showing his dedication to his team, both fantasy and real (if it counts as real). Overall he’s been an active earner and efficient WR in both the DSFL and NSFL.
48OA: George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher, LB, SJS (called up)
Key Stats: 90 tackles, 2 TFLs, 1 FF, 1 sack, 4 PDs. 65OA in the S22 NSFL Draft.
The creation of the NSFL Weather Fantasy League should solidify him as one of the most important members of this draft class, but for the sake of media money I should probably go into more detail. It’s also rumored that the SJS/ARI rivalry originated with a preseason bet between Fisher and Golladay, which is part of the reason I need to write this. Between Weather Fantasy, CK2 mods, and fishing streams, he’s been very active in the LR, setting up various games for the team. Despite being on SJS he still put up a good statline in his rookie season, and the drop in draft position is anything but an indicator of his skill. As an additional bonus, he’s (as far as I know) the only player to have their name growled on the draft stream, courtesy of JPach.
60OA: Calvin Golladay, OL, ARI (called up)
Key Stats: 41 pancakes, 1 sack allowed. 40 OA in the S22 NSFL Draft.
It feels weird writing about myself, but I’d consider myself to have been a good value here. Golladay’s never put up excellent stats in the league (even with only two trackable OL stats), but he’s still been a mainstay at left tackle for both Tijuana and Arizona. Though a consistent earner on the field (excluding my recent inactivity), most of my value has come off it. I’ve repped the Luchadores and Outlaws for the awards committee the last two seasons, been very active in our LR, and was voted a captain after my rookie season in the DSFL. Inactive OL are arguably more important on the field for DSFL teams (similar production for more seasons), but I’ve done what I can to make an impact elsewhere.
68OA: Friedrich Vequain, WR, ARI (sent down)
Key Stats: 72 catches, 938 yards, 6 TDs. 100OA in the NSFL Draft. 6 S22 Game Balls
After being sent down by the Outlaws, Vequain broke out for an elite season in the DSFL, leading the league in catches and yards, and tying for 3rd in touchdowns. He’s also won a lions’ share of offensive game balls with 6 (one of which being shared with the entire receiving corps), and 3 honorable mentions. It’s been an elite season for him, and he’s been active in the LR too. 100OA in the NSFL draft is rather low, but he should be a steal for the OutClaws in the seasons to come. He’ll be returning for one more season with the Luchadores and will look to continue to dominate the DSFL
92OA: Magnus Valdyr, S, YKW (sent down)
Key Stats: 67 tackles, 1 FR, 4 sacks, 1 Int., 1 PD. 83OA in the NSFL Draft. 2 (3?) S22 Game Balls.
Best known for his 2 Int., 2 TD performance to defeat the Myrtle Beach Buccaneers as a rookie, Valdyr earned me a significant amount of (undeserved) hate for his egregious Performance of the Year snub. He shows up at the biggest moments, winning a defensive game ball in the Ultimini (a defensive effort that held London to just 6 points) and in a division-clinching week 14 win. In the unofficial week 3 victory over MB, he came up with a crucial interception at the 1-yard line to save the game for Tijuana. It might not have counted, but was still an impressive feat. His overall statline doesn’t stand out, but he steps up in the biggest games. As a bonus, he’s been pretty active in the LR, too.
96OA: Reginald Gilbert, RB, COL (sent down)
Key Stats: 295 carries, 1331 rushing yards, 4.5 ypc, 10 TDs, 9 rec, 92 rec yards, 1 TD. 76OA in the NSFL Draft. 5 S22 Game Balls.
Ronald has been an excellent back for the Luchadores as the lead back in their two-headed monster at RB. Rob’s 10 rushing TDs were second only to fellow Luchadore running back Running Back, and his 5 Game Balls trailed only receiver Friedrich Vequain. He’s been extremely active, earning a captain nomination in his second season with Tijuana and being voted funniest member of the LR. Radagast also is at the center of a Luchadores tradition, after GM Jay_Doctor mistakenly referred to him as “Reggie” (Twice!) while listing game balls. Among his five game balls is an Ultimini game ball after a 20 carry, 62 yard, 1 TD performance against the Royals, an accomplishment second only to winning Al’s CK2 tourney.
100OA: LiterallyJust A. Hexagon, S, NOLA (Sent Down)
Key Stats: 103 tackles, 1 TFL, 5 Int., 6 PDs, 1 TD. 4 S22 Game Balls. 48OA in the S22 NSFL Draft.
I should probably title this the JPach S22 Luchadores review, as he’s the reason it’s getting posted right now. As the fastest Hexagon in the league, JPach was a great addition to the team so late in the draft. His focus on speed has been another joke in Tijuana, but it’s certainly served him well. As an assistant simmer, official draft stream button presser/name-growler (and the best one at that), and Tijuana captain and sim tester, Hex has made a huge impact across the league. His 5 interceptions led the league, with one of them being taken to the house. Of course the large amount of tackles (3rd among DBs) indicates an enormous amount of catches allowed in coverage which should preclude him from taking home any awards, but his overall impact on the field has been positive. The Hottest Simulation Football League may have flopped, but he showed initiative and promise in its creation. It goes without saying that he’s been an active member of the locker room, having bullied me into posting this.
116OA: Jacob Smalls, K, SAR (Sent Down)
Key Stats: 34/37 XPs (91.9%), 22/27 FGs (81.5%), 71 punts, 3127 yards (44 avg). 2 S22 Game Balls. 110OA in the S22 NSFL Draft.
Smalls was clutch for Tijuana this past season, a huge turnaround from the previous year. I’ll admit that I was rather critical of him during his rookie season after some unfortunate missed kicks, so his field-flipping ability as a punter and excellent accuracy at critical moments were huge for our run-heavy offense. Two offensive game balls is also impressive for a kicker, but he’s been a weapon finishing drives for the offense and keeping opposing offenses pinned. The Kiwi Kicker has been another active member of the LR, a Pro Bowler for the South team.
180OA: Jim Waters, QB/CB, HON (Sent Down)
Key Stats: 95/164 (57.9), 984 passing yards, 8 TDs, 2 Ints., 86.5 QBR. 1 S22 Game Ball. 109OA in the NSFL Draft.
Despite recently converting to CB for the Hahalua, Waters played his two DSFL seasons for the Luchadores at QB. He was a 1b. Option behind starter Ben Slothlisberger, but still led the team in TDs and the league in QBR. He’s been pretty active for the team, especially for such a late pick, and offered excellent value for his draft position. The team has rallied around him after some criticisms (commentary during draft streams being a sore point with his teammates) and fully supports his bid to become an NSFL GM. #Waters4GM. We also are working to aid his rehabilitation efforts for a crippling gambling addiction, and have considered a GoFundMe to fund his Pop Tart supply until he can financially recover.
244OA: Julio Tirtawidjaja, RB/QB, CHI (Called Up)
Key Stats: 230 carries, 925 yards, 4 ypc, 2 TDs, 20 rec, 122 rec yards. 66OA in the S22 NSFL Draft
The Tirtawidjaja career arc has been very interesting so far, as he’s gone from extremely late pick and 3rd string DSFL RB to a starting NSFL RB as a rookie for the Butchers. He was a workhorse back for Chicago, and has remained active in the Tijuana locker room. As a bonus, he’s the only RB in DSFL history to also play QB (sort of), something the Butchers should’ve taken into consideration last season given their QB situation. If not for the lack of touchdowns (which comes from playing in Chicago), Tirt would’ve earned a nomination. He showcased his ability as a meteorologist as well, finishing 2nd in the inaugural season of the Fantasy Weather League. For the Nth time I’ll repeat that it's another very active player for the Luchadores here.
260OA: Nat Wright, LB, COL (Sent Down)
Key Stats: 124 tackles, 2 TFLs, 1 sack. 3 S22 Game Balls. 103OA in the S22 NSFL Draft.
After initial inactivity, Wright stepped into a starting role at linebacker for the Luchadores last season. He was a tackling machine, even setting a Tijuana record for tackles in a playoff game during the conference championship game. He’s maintained a solid level of activity, checking in on the team throughout the season. An active player so late in the draft is an achievement, let alone setting team records in the process.
Waiver Add 1: Greedy Sly, S, LDN/COL (Just Drafted)
Key Stats: 92 tackles, 2 FR, 2 sacks, 1 Int. (not against Sloth), 2 PDs. 1OA in the S23 DSFL and NSFL Drafts.
Syl was an excellent waiver addition for the Luchadores, even if his consistent podcast production put him out of their reach for the S23 DSFL draft. Even if he’s with the Royals we still love him here in Tijuana, as he’s stayed relatively active as a Lucho with us. He’s already a GM in just his second season in the league, and the future is extremely bright for him. Hopefully he doesn’t forget that half-season he spent with us when he first joined!
Waiver Add 2: Tyler Montain, DT, DAL/BAL (Just Drafted)
Key Stats: 35 tackles, 1 FR, 5 sacks, 2OA in the DSFL and NSFL Drafts.
Another player that priced himself out of our range in the 1st round, Amid also hasn’t forgotten us, checking in on the LR from time to time. To have our first two waiver pickups go 1st and 2nd in both the DSFL and NSFL draft is a pretty incredible feat, especially when they’ve been great guys in the LR as well.
Sorry for the delay (both tonight and overall) to the three people waiting on this, love all my former teammates down in Tijuana! I'm looking forward to our mass recreation for round two! Thanks to Sid and Mith for the idea, and good luck on next season’s Luchadores’ S22 draft class review
4OA: Ben Slothlisberger, QB, NOLA (sent down).
Key Stats: 170/271 (62.7%), 1797 yards, 6 TDs, 9 Ints, 75.5 QBR. 17OA in the S22 NSFL Draft. 1 S22 Game Ball.
