Good Day,
Now that the draft is official and we have had a weekend to process the results, let us dive in and get a better look at how it went.
So in the first four rounds we had fifty six total players drafted. The break down of how many of each position is as follows :
Corner Backs : Eight
Defensive Ends : Five
Offensive Line : Six
Line Backers : Seven
Safeties : Eight
Defensive Tackles : Six
Tight Ends : Three
Wide Receiver : Five
Running Back : Four
Quarter Back : Two (Technically One of them switched to WR)
Kicker : Zero
So we had a tie for the most drafted position at eight, between corner backs and safeties. It appears defensive backs are the most popular position by far to either be drafted, or created in the first place. Line backers were second with seven. I'm sensing a theme in what teams seem to value the highest. Who can cover and make tackles. Next up are the linemen, both offensive and defensive tackles at six a piece. Technically wide receiver tied at six as Holloway did swap positions. From there, it drops down to five for defensive ends, then four at running back, one for quarter back and zero kickers taken in the top four rounds of this years draft. So, if you ever want to be drafted at the top of the board, you are going to want to be a defensive back or line backer, but three defensive ends went in the first five picks... so if you are the right guy you could get drafted high as one of them as well.
So Round One Pick One :
Berlin Fire Salamanders, Swantavius Jones, CB
A corner back at number one? Not surprising at all. A position of need and very important for all teams. He was a fourth rounder in the DSFL draft last season and really proved himself and moved all the way up to number one over all. As they say, just because you go in the middle or late in the DSFL draft, doesn't mean you can't improve your draft stock and get noticed by all the teams. I think the Salamanders are going to be happy with their corner back of the future.
Round One Pick Two:
Yellowknife Wraiths, Dan Foster, CB
What, a corner back at number two over all as well? Yea, again not surprising. Super active, high earning corners are where it is at for these first two teams. He was the first pick of round two in the DSFL draft last season. No real surprise he went this high and I expect him to be a cornerstone of this team's secondary for years to come. The Wraiths are hoping for another title soon, and players like this are what they need to get back to the top.
Round One Pick Three:
Philadelphia Liberty, Tex Wrecks, DE
Our first defensive end and non corner back taken at number three, and the first of three defensive ends in a row. Some people had him potentially going at number one overall, but the salamanders really needed a corner, so it was not meant to be. But Philly is super happy to get a number one over all type player with the third pick. He went in the fourth round at the number four pick in the DSFL. He really raised his draft stock by his activity and play during his season last year. Great pick, going to be a force on the end.
Round One Pick Four:
San Jose Sabercats, Raylan Crowder, DE
The second of the three defensive ends taken in a row. The saber cats just won the title this last season and now draft a highly ranked defensive end to help them try and get back. He was a first rounder from last season at the sixth pick of the DSFL draft. Not only was he hyped coming into the league, he managed to actually improve his stock and go even earlier this time around.
Round One Pick Five:
Colorado Yeti, Albert Ruschmann, DE
The last of the defensive ends that go in the first forty four picks of the draft. The drop off, according to the teams scouting these guys, was huge from these three top tier guys to the next closest one. Forty one picks later, a team finally takes the fourth defensive end off the board. He is the first guy on the list to go in the exact same position in both the DSFL and ISFL drafts. So he was hyped coming in and managed to keep that same level of performance. Great player to help this team keep up what they did last season.
Round One Pick Six:
Baltimore Hawks, Felix Archstone, OL
Finally an offensive player gets drafted. Only took six picks in the draft to get him. High level offensive lineman are a needed part of teams, and seem to be fairly rare spread out over the fourteen teams, so, no surprise they took him here. He went in the second round at pick seven. So he definitely moved up through activity, earning and stellar play. He will hopefully anchor their front five for as long as those chubby little legs can hold on. Another great pick that looks to build for the future.
Round One Pick Seven:
Honolulu Hahalua, Guy Fields, LB
Our first line backer off the board, and some mock drafters had him as high as number one over all. I do think that was a popular take, but not from the guys in the know, as they all had a corner back going to the salamanders. This is a player who got a lot of attention for his off the field dealings, and is a large part of him going this high. Plus he is an excellent player and active, so not really a surprise. He went in the second round at pick six, so moved almost a full round to get drafted here. A great pick, and the guy seems like a great locker room addition, as well as on the field.
Round One Pick Eight:
Arizona Outlaws, Tayshawn Crunk, S
Our first safety off the board, another player some had mocked much higher than number eight. Another of the league leading sixteen defensive backs drafted this time around. He was a pretty sought after player in the draft last year going in the second round at the fifth spot. An all around great talent, with good activity and likely to be a long time play maker on the defensive side of the ball. Another good round one pick.
Round One Pick Nine:
Chicago Butchers, James Gath, CB
Yep, another corner taken, the third so far and the fourth defensive back in nine picks. Again not really a surprise here, with the expansion draft really hurting some of the teams in the defensive back area. There were five corner backs taken in the first round, the most of any position, with safeties added in, a total of six defensive backs in the first round. He was the second over all pick in the DSFL draft a season ago and while he fell a bit from there, he was still a first round pick with huge upside and expectations after his DSFL drafting.
Round One Pick Ten:
New Orleans Second Line, Medicinal Toblerone, OL
Our second offensive player drafted in the first round of the two offensive players drafted in the first round. And of course, he is linemen, and a highly regarded one, some had going closer to the fourth or fifth pick in some mocks. He has a great name, so that has to help his draft stock. He went in the tenth round at pick number three. Holy smokes, that is a huge jump up from his DSFL draft. I don't know if that is the biggest jump or not, but it is worth mentioning just how much you can grow your draft stock by how you handle yourself in that first season and of course how well you perform. Should be a big part of their line going forwards.
Round One Pick Eleven:
Orange County Otters, Goat Tank Engine, DT
Well, we have our first defensive tackle off the board at pick eleven over all. I really only have to say two words about this guy, GOAT TANK. Well known for his words, well mostly just saying goat tank a lot. But a strong performer on and off the field and with an awesome name to go with it. He went in the first round at the third over all pick. So yes he fell, but also, you have to remember each team is looking for certain needs they want to fill, and while he may be a high level talent, the otters were the first team to decide they needed a defensive tackle. Solid pick, I think he will make the otters happy, should he stay there long term.
Round One Pick Twelve:
Sarasota Sailfish, Peter Patterson, CB
Holy moly, another corner off the board in the first round. Another highly rated corner some had mocking a decent bit higher, but pretty much everyone had him going somewhere in the first round to one of the corner back needy teams out there. He was the seventh over all pick in the DSFL last season and managed to keep the hype alive. Potential to be a long term, high producing ball snatcher for the sailfish.
Round One Pick Thirteen:
New York Silverbacks, Hank Winchester, LB
The second line backer off the board at thirteen over all, another guy who was mocked to go somewhere in the first round, it varied quite a bit depending on who you listened to. But, he was highly sought after out of the line backers. He was drafted in the third round with the third pick of that round. You have to assume he is a beast on the field with a last name like winchester. He goes to one of the expansion teams with their first pick of the draft. Could be a really good draft pick a this spot. Hard to project for an expansion team though.
Round One Pick Fourteen:
San Jose Sabercats, Rich Triplet, CB
My favorite pick of the first round and our last corner back off the board for the first round. I think this guy has all kinds of first round talent, and I believe he has the ability to out perform most, if not all, of the corner backs taken ahead of him. Great user who is active, helpful, has invited friends to the league already, a team captain in the DSFL and all around good dude. He was drafted in the second round with the fourth pick of that round in the DSFL. I think this is the steal fo the first round and the Sabercats are going to really be happy with this pick over time.
First round breakdown,
Six Defensive Backs taken
Four Defensive Linemen taken
Two Line Backers Taken
Two Offensive Lineman
So defense wins the day for first round drafting. With a only two players taken on the offensive side and both of those players are linemen. Seems like the goal of most teams is to limit scoring by the other team and not just score more points. What will round two bring?
Round Two Pick One:
Yellowknife Wraiths Djibutee McJimmerson TE
Starting off the second round with our first tight end of the draft to the Wraiths. A good pick up over all. A good tight end is basically a hack for this game. So we can hope he stays active and continues to earn like he is. Fifteen picks in to the draft to see an offensive skill player taken by any team. Will we finally see a wide receiver, a running back, or god help us a quarter back? Anyways, he was drafted in the seventh round with pick three of the DSFL draft, definitely one of our top movers from one season to the next. Should be a great pick up.
Round Two Pick Two :
Arizona Outlaws Chuck Roth OL
Our third offensive lineman off the board at the second pick of round two. No real surprise here either, every team could use more offensive linemen. Another active and quality earner looking to anchor this offensive line for years to come. He was taken in the sixth round with the first pick, yet another player who managed to far out do his original draft spot. I can't really find anything wrong with this type of pick.
Round Two Pick Three:
Philadelphia Liberty Killian Chambers WR
Oh boy, finally a wide receiver gets taken at pick seventeen overall. Nice to see some offensive players coming off the board finally. Not the top earner in the class at his position, but clearly this team wanted him and they got him. He went in the second round at pick three in the DSFL draft. He is being called up for the upcoming season as the Liberty needed help at wide receiver after the expansion draft. Should be a good pick long term for them.
Round Two Pick Four:
Baltimore Hawks Tony Yeboah S
Back to the defensive side of the ball and of course another defensive back. Another solid pick, hard to argue with as all teams need tons of defensive backs. He seems active and a solid person to have around in the locker room. He went in the fifth round at pick number seven in the DSFL draft last season. I feel like teams are really loading up on the defensive side of the ball. Seems like a good for the future backs of this team.
Round Two Pick Five:
New Orleans Second Line Adam Mellott OL
A great pick this late for a super active and great locker room guy. I am honestly surprised he fell this far, but also being in a closed locker room and spending most of his time there, it makes sense. Harder to judge how someone will fit in with your team without actually interacting with them as much. He went in the eighth round with pick six in the DSFL draft. He is a confirmed new user, so I am sure that played a part of his falling that far in the first draft, but he was definitely on people's radars after his DSFL season and his twelve thousand word article midway through the season. Over all a great pick up this late in the first two rounds.
Round Two Pick Six:
Orange County Otters Richard Leaking LB
No surprise the picks head back to the defensive side of the ball. And what a name this guy has, if you shorten his first name it is Rich Leaking, pretty funny. Anyways another touted line backer getting drafted early. He was drafted in the sixth round of the DSFL draft and made a big splash to move up to the second round. Should be a great piece in their defense once he gets the call up. For now, he get's to stay down and have a season maxed out and killing some rookies.
Round Two Pick Seven:
Honolulu Hahalua Davriel Lavigne S
Yep, surprising, another defensive back taken somewhere in the first two rounds. But can not argue with this pick, another highly touted player from the DSFL draft who managed to at least keep some of the hype alive. He was the over all number one pick from the DSFL draft last season, and while he did slip down the boards a bit, he is a high earner and one of the best safeties in the draft. He should be a great starter for how ever long he remains with the Hahalua.
Round Two Pick Eight:
Arizona Outlaws Vance Slattery DT
And finally a second defensive tackle taken. Only took way too many picks for this to happen. He is a great user with a great player. He was a round six pick four in the DSFL draft, which ended up being a steal for the Luchadores. I think this is another great pick up at a great place. Defensive tackle is a good position to have high earners with strong activity, also a great locker room presence.
Round Two Pick Nine:
Honolulu Hahalua Rusty Rucker LB
Wait, another defensive player? Well yes, as you know this draft was driven by defensive players. With their second pick of the round they added to their non linemen group. Seems like they are looking to shore up their defense for the future. He was drafted in the first round at pick eight of the DSFL draft. He didn't fall far, just hard with some many teams in the ISFL and two of them new teams, it makes sense a lot of teams are scrambling for positions of great importance.
Round Two Pick Ten:
New York Silverbacks Dukburg Quakstak CB
Let's stick with the theme of the first two rounds, another defensive back. Another highly touted guy with a great(or terrible) name taken at a good place. He was taken in the second round with the eighth pick in the DSFL draft. A solid pick for an expansion team looking for guys who can get on the field quickly and make a difference for as long as possible.
Round Two Pick Eleven:
Austin Copperheads Jackie Daytona QB
Oh my goodness, we have a quarter back taken in this draft. First one, and only, off the board in the second round. Looks like Austin has their quarter back for the for seeable future in Daytona, as their current is getting smacked around with regression like a champ. He was drafted in the fourth round at pick number three in the DSFL draft last season. Not much to say here other than for a team that will have a need here really soon, this was a great pick and should get on the field fairly soon.
Round Two Pick Twelve:
Sarasota Sailfish Clay Stallworth OL
The pancake master from last season, had a thirteen pancake game.... that is crazy(some say it was a bug). Anyways our fifth offensive line man off the board, which is not a surprise with how much better player linemen are compared with bots. I think some had him mocked higher than this, but still one of the first twenty eight picks over all is good. He was drafted in the seventh round with the seventh pick in the DSFL draft, he definitely increased his stock for the ISFL draft.
Round Two Pick Thirteen:
Colorado Yeti Dave Batista TE
And we finally have our second tight end off the board at the end of the second round. Great name, I guess he got tired of wrestling and decided killing people on the football field is the new thing to do. Either way, he seems active and like a good user to have on their team. Depending on his arch type, tight ends can be top tier receivers or top tier blockers. He went in the fourth round with the first pick of that round in the DSFL draft. He definitely moved up through his play in his first season.
Round Two Pick Fourteen:
San Jose Sabercats Xmus Flaxon Jaxon-Waxon S
Yep, here we go with yet another defensive back player getting drafted just inside the second round. And he wins the award for weirdest name so far in the draft. Really not sure anyone can beat it out for that um award? Anyways, he was drafted in the fifth round with the eighth pick of that round in the DSFL draft, so moved up quite a bit. Which is no surprise as he is a position so many teams needed going forwards.
And there we have the end of the second round of the season twenty five draft.
Insights for the second round:
Four Defensive Backs taken
Three Offensive Linemen taken
Two Line Backers taken
Two Tight Ends taken
One each of Defensive Tackle, Wide Receiver, and the lone Quarter back.
That makes seven defensive players to seven offensive players. So an even split after an overwhelming number of defensive players taken in the first round.
Which I guess does make some sense when you consider teams took so many defensive players early, some teams are not willing to reach for the next guy when the best player available is offense and a position of need anyways.
Over all first two round saw twenty eight players drafted. Of those twenty eight, nineteen where on the defensive side of the ball with only nine on the other side. The only positions left off the board after two full rounds are running back and kicker. Defensive backs dominated the draft from a numbers game with ten total drafted out of twenty eight players. The next closest are offensive linemen and defensive lineman with five each, line backer falls just one short with four.
Basically if you aspire to be taken in the first two rounds of the draft, play defense or offensive line. Any other position and the odds are against you.
Later,
Yes I plan on doing round three and four later. I am tired of typing at the moment.
