Here's my spicy hot take: Adam Schell - LB for the Berlin Fire Salamanders - will be the league leader in tackles this season. Will he be the Defensive MVP? No. Should he be? Also no. The ISFL is a league of its own and the S24 DSFL Defensive MVP is not quite to the point where he will be competing for league MVP honors - trust me, he'll get there. However, he has settled in nicely to his roll as a run stopper and short coverage specialist for the Berlin Fire Salamanders. While it can be confusing to find him on the field - the Salamanders inexplicably have three #55's in their base defensive package - the opposition is feeling Schell's presence with bruising tackles left and right. He currently sits third in the league in tackles with 49 through 5 games, on pace to hit just under 160 tackles a season after recording 100 even in his rookie campaign. While he will have to work on his big playmaking before he becomes a candidate for Defensive MVP (his lone interception was impressive, but only 1 TFL and zero sacks through 5 games will not cut it), he is making strides towards becoming a household name in the ISFL. So why the confidence that he will lead the league in tackles this season? Opportunity. Berlin's offense cannot sustain drives this season, ranking in the bottom three in points scored so far, yet their defense cannot get off the field and has allowed by far the most points to their opposition. This is not happening via big plays very often, so Schell has plenty of opportunity to log tackles as he's been on the field non stop throughout the first 5 games and there is no reason to think this will stop anytime soon. While frustrating, this will allow Schell to continue to rack up big numbers the rest of the season which is why I predict that he will lead the ISFL in tackles in this his sophomore season. We'll see if he can win any games in the process...
