JOEB gets 25% of the payout and I get 75%
I need to make some money for equipment so I decided to interview some people. I think it will be nice to get to know my teammates.
The first one that agreed to this interview was JOEB, who was the guy who scouted me for the Norfolk Seawolves.
This was a great conversation we had over several days and here it is underneath:
Steven OSullivan: Well to start off, how did you find the ISFL? What made you want to play?
JOEB: I was a part of the huge S22 r/nfl class. I was scrolling through reddit wasting time as I normally would when I saw the post talking about an online football experience, where you created a player and we simmed these games. It instantly hooked my interest because I love foootball so much, but I also love role-playing games (like I absolutely love D&D for example). And being someone who could never play irl due to my size (I’m a smol boi), I thought having my own football player would be really exciting
And then when I joined into the discord channels that’s when I really started to fall in love. It was so awesome being to meet so many new people through the league, especially during the excitement of S22.
Steven OSullivan: Has the experience lived up to that initial excitement for you? You obviously seem more involved in the running of the league already, so I imagine it has!
JOEB: Lol yea it’s been so much fun being a part of the league and getting involved. In Norfolk I was able to create a little family there and really make some great friends. And then being drafted to Philly was definitely one of the biggest highlights of my time here so far. The drafts are filled with so much excitement and hype so those moments are so enjoyable.
Steven OSullivan: The drafts are definitely one of the most fun experiences! How high did you go in the draft? Who are your closest friends in the league?
JOEB: In the DSFL draft I went 14th to Norfolk, and out of like the 200 of us I was really proud of that. And then in the ISFL Draft I went 3 overall to Philly! There was really no place I wanted to go to more than Philly so being drafted to them so high was like a dream come true.
I would say some of my closest friends are definitely Jimi, Lightnoir who I admittedly haven’t talked to a lot recently but it was always so much fun when we did, and Matty. Jimi is a really funny guy and we always have such genuine or real conversations it’s great, once he gets his new laptop we’re gonna be playing more video games together too which is gonna be fun. Light I need to talk to more because he’s so friendly and as I said fun to talk with. And Matty is such a nice guy, I talk to him a lot about anime so it’s really fun to bond over that and recommend each other shows. There are so many more people who I could include here but instead I’ll just say that everyone I’ve met in Norfolk and Philly have really become great friends of mine and I’m so glad to have gotten to meet them all.
Steven OSullivan: What made you choose the position you play and how has that affected your experience of the league? Do you already know what you want to be on your recreate?
JOEB: When I was creating I was torn between Wide receiver and safety. I’m a Cardinals fan so I had the idea of creating a WR like Larry Fitzgerald or a safety like Tyrann Mathieu. If I ever played football irl those would have been the positions I’d want to play because I’m quick and they’re both really fun it looks like. So I ended up going with safety because I had asked around the league and saw that there was a much higher need for DBs than WRs, so I went with safety. I think on my recreate I’ll probably be a wide receiver but with the change in sims maybe something new will stand out to me.
Steven OSullivan: You mentioned dnd before. What race and class do you usually play in dnd?
JOEB: I don't necessarily have a go race/class. I've played with three main characters before, a Dwarf Sorcerer, a Water Genasi Cleric, and now an Aarakocra Ranger who's my current character. One thing that ties them together is the use of magic. I really love being able to learn and cast different spells, especially during battle, so I tend to lean towards classes which can do this. As for race it's sorta just whatever I feel like at the time of character creation and what sounds fun.
(for those who have not played before, an Aarakocra is a bird person pretty much)
Steven OSullivan: Very interesting! How does dnd compare to this league in your eyes and are there other things you would want the league to adapt from dnd?
JOEB: DICE ROLLING
lol I'm kidding tho
Steven OSullivan: Haha
I thought magic!
JOEB: hahahahahhaa omg that'd be awesome
but fr though I'd say that the league already implements a good amount from D&D, the character creation and the way you can control which aspects to increase for example is similar to picking out a race/class and attributing skills like charisma or strength for example. It's obviously focused on football rather than a medieval setting but it's relatively similar. I don't think there's really much else this league could bring in because the rest of D&D surrounds magic and dice rolling lol. I do love role-playing PTs though and seeing those pop up is always fun
Steven OSullivan: Role-playing is fun, my players have been kind of focused on that. I like doing actual people as my players. I used a former Austrian soccer player as a kicker and now a field marshall as a wide receiver. And in the PBE I used a pop star haha. So I would also love to see more role-playing.
JOEB: hahahaha that's actually really cool! with character creation being completely free as it is, it really allows for some fun renders and stories
Steven OSullivan: Has it been fulfilling to step into a gm role in the minors? Is being a gm in the majors something you dream of?
JOEB: I've really loved every moment of being Norfolk's GM, scouting and going through the draft process is so much fun, and watching the users interact in the locker room and enjoying their time with us is something I really enjoy. I would definitely say it's been fulfilling. Scorp and Juni were the GMs when I was drafted to Norfolk and they made the LR environment really so much fun and welcoming, and I'm glad that I've been able to carry on with that and see it reflected in the users we have.
Honestly I would never want to GM in the majors. There's a lot greater responsibility there that I wouldn't be comfortable handling. As a GM in the DSFL, my goal is to develop my players and help them get into the ISFL, while providing a welcoming and fun home. An ISFL GM's job is focused on building a team to win championships, obviously you want to have fun along the way, but when it comes down to it the goal of the Ultimus is always lingering. It's extra pressure that I wouldn't want to have on me.
Steven OSullivan: Interesting. Does the constant change in people on the team not make it hard? You finally find someone awesome and a couple seasons later they are gone again? Is winning an Ultimini not a goal then? Or at least not the main goal?
JOEB: constantly changing players definitely does make it difficult, but it also makes it really fun too because I'm able to constantly find more people that we like to replace them. And if I'm doing things right, even if they're off the team, they're never fully gone. Users can earn their spot in the War room and help us with scouting and developing players in that area is really satisfying as well. It's really tough to describe but winning the Ultimini isn't the goal, but creating a functioning and at least partially successful team to the best of my abilities still is. My number one goal is to make sure that everyone drafted to Norfolk will call it their home. I want you all to enjoy your time with us win or lose, and make friends in the locker room. When drafting, obviously we look at team needs and what positions we're weak at, but we weigh personality and perceived LR fit more heavily than that. With that all said, I know it is also part of my responsibility to set this team up for success, so I won't go and draft 10 WRs even though there are 10 WRs that I love. We will draft users who we still love at more needed positions, and wait and see if a user like yourself who we also loved due to a fantastic scouting convo with will fall to us in the later rounds due to their position.
I hope that all makes sense and doesn't sound like pretentious or anything, it's sorta hard to explain
Steven OSullivan: It makes sense! I think it sounds great!
Who has been the best player you ever picked and who was the most unexpected success?
JOEB: Oh man you want me to pick a best player?!?! Do you mean on field performance or overall?
These are both pretty heavy questions doc lol
Steven OSullivan:
I need to ask tough questions! You can choose how to interpret them!
JOEB: Alright then lol
I think one of the best has definitely been Jimi. He’s been an amazing presence in the locker room and he really has been an amazing help as my Co-GM. He really emphasizes what it means to be a GM in the DSFL. Aside from that we’ve become such great friends so I couldn’t be happier to have him with us in Norfolk
The most unexpected success... I’ll have to get back to you on that one, I’ll need to look at my draft sheets again lol
Oooooh wait I have the perfect person for most unexpected
It has to be Schwarznarr. So the story there is that Isa’s GF had created a kicker in he league. Isa wasn’t too sure how active Schwarz would be but wanted to give her the best home imaginable, Norfolk. So Isa pushed pretty hard for us to pick her up off waivers and we were really lucky that we were able to. (She was a kicker so this was honestly a big part of why I believe). When I first reached out she was admittedly very closed off to the league to start, but after getting her in the locker room Schwarz became a staple of Norfolk. Her presence in the locker room is so fantastic and welcome and she’s made great contributions to the team through the war room as well. Not only that but she’s the current rookie mentor head. I never expected any of this when we picked her up from waivers, but I’m incredibly thankful that it turned out this way.
Schwarz is such a big part of Norfolk now that honestly I have a hard time imagining our LR without her, so I’m so glad that we were able to get her on the team
Steven OSullivan: What do you look forward to most in this current season and going into next season?
JOEB: Currently I look forward to seeing the growth in the LR and how you all meld together. There’s already been some awesome interactions that have been great to see, and I look forward to watching as that continues. Going into next season I look forward to starting the process over again, scouting is something I’m always excited for, and bringing in the new Seawolves is always an exciting time. Especially since next season is an r/nfl class, I’m excited to see how many amazing prospects Norfolk can get a hold of
Steven OSullivan: Cool cool, thank you for the interview!
