I am going to react to the first few weeks of the DSFL season. My thoughts behind this are that 1, I am a DSFL player and have followed the DSFL season closer than the ISFL, and 2, there's much more at stake for the DSFL players I think. I am trying to be a first round pick, best of all time. With that being said, my biggest reaction is that the 8 time champions, the team south of the border, the TIJUANAAAAA LUCHADOREEEEEES are gonna repeat and get the 9th ultimini this season. Yes, I may be the most biased person posting but you gotta look at the facts. The most important players on the Tijuana offense are all rookies, meaning they have all season to grow into their roles. We have already seen them start to get better, especially after that big win vs. Kansas City. I also know that when the season is over, we will see that both the Tijuana RB's will be up for major awards. OROTY, RBOTY, and MVP are going to all end up as Tijuana players. As far as ISFL, the otters seem to have this season on autopilot. I don't see them finishing anywhere else than Ultimus Champions.
Well if you checked my season predictions, you'll see that I have some easy hits and some head-scratching misses. In the NSFC, it was too easy to expect a big season from Chicago, they have amassed a solid core of young talent to bookend the dependable veterans that rode through the storm. Chicago should finally be able to get O'Leary over the hump, if only Yellowknife didnt exist. The Wraiths are my darkhorse candidate to reach the Ultimus, and they wont be an easy out either. The Wraiths have done a wonderful job transitioning from the Bigsby era to the Jack era. And even with Haynandi not around to be a security blanket, Skyline has shown he is ready to be a top back in the league.
The rest of the NSFC, sans Sarasota is pretty much unpredictable but expected because each team is filled with holes. Philly and Baltimore seem to be in a contest as to who can keep the most, most-regressed players on the roster. Colorado ultimately cannot afford all of their talented players and Berlin's defensive wall might as well be the autobahn. Sarasota though, seemed to be headed for similar fates with Boss Jr taking over for Dexter Banks II, but Sarasota shipped off some deadweight, acquired active players to better balance the roster, and have constructed a team fit to their high octane preference.
In the ASFC, Orange County with two losses is a shock, and not being solely in first with those two losses is even bigger. But the fact that they are tied with New Orleans and Austin is the biggest shock, aside from the fact that New York took the Otters to the shed. New Orleans, with all the retirements, departures, and regression is running the ultra-conservative but efficient run heavy offense, riding the legs of new buck Mitch Rotchburns while being aided by the lethal secondary of Blaylock, Hexagon, Rector and Witten. Meanwhile, Austin, despite losing Lavelle Jr. and Carolina BBQ, have continued to trot out an elite defense that tries it hardest to keep the offense in the game long enough for Cole to warm up and spread the ball around to all his weapons in his last year.
As for the rest, the real surprise is how quick Arizona and Honolulu sunk to the bottom. Arizona's consistent talent bleeding seems to have finally caught up to them as Cue starts to hit higher levels of regression. Losing two big secondary cornerstones, and two high quality offensive weapons will hurt just about any team. As for Honolulu, Skywalker seems to have regressed as Podolak regresses with no clear successor waiting to take over. And with how barren the Hawaiin roster is, I'm not sure they will escape this tidal wave of turmoil.
sadness. It is really my only legitimate reaction looking at the first 7 weeks of the ISFL season. Honolulu started off with 1 win in 7 games, and 0 wins in the first 6 games, now sitting at last place in the conference. For what was supposed to be our season, it has thoroughly disappointed, and we are about to enter the half way point of the season. Test sims have us not making the playoffs, ceiling at maybe 6 wins if lucky, and honestly I do not know what I would prefer. There is some good prospects in this upcoming draft, and #1 overall, could help us avoid this happening next season. Looking at my player, Jim Waters, things are not looking that good either. On the bright side, he is already better than he was last season, with more interceptions, from a very dissapointing campaign. Things have really fallen off with Waters, from running for Rookie of the Year in his first season, to now struggling to get an interception. 8 Pass Deflections is the most disappointing part, considering he has had 20+ PDs in every season he has played in the league, now having only 1.1 PDs per game is bad, and could make me lose my streak. I do think that Honolulu will end up with 5 wins this season, and Waters will have 3 interceptions and 15ish PDs based on how things have been looking.
Honolulu's struggles this season is a surprise to Asher. After a strong showing last season, Asher had hopes that this was the beginning of a rise. He didn't necessarily believe that meant a playoff berth or the opening of a Ultimus window, but he did think that it successfully translated into progress. He also feels somewhat personally responsible being a defensive player and having Honolulu's defense having the most points against in the entire league. That being said, he isn't necessarily disappointed with his stats. He ranks among the top of league leaders in sacks and tackles for loss, but he wishes he could do more. He will need to take some time to remind himself that he is only one player on the team, and there is only so much that one player can do. There is still time to turn the season around. Honolulu may be the worst team in the league right now, but it does not need to stay that way. At the very least, this can be a season of learning. We very well may need to take some time to identify what our problems are and plan to fix them in the coming offseason. Honolulu is still a young team. So long as they continue to grow, they will hit their peak soon enough.
