QUARTERBACK
What’s new for Quarterbacks in DDSPF21?
JAJA DING DONG THE WITCH IS DEAD!!
Rejoice, everyone! Thanks to some much-needed updates, the thorn in everyone’s collective side, the 79 speed QB, is no more. What does that mean for you, the user? Well, for starters, it now means that you can feel a little bit more freedom when selecting your archetype and how to build your player out.
RUSHING QBS ARE SCHEME AGNOSTIC!!
This ties nicely in with the removal of the 79 speed build, so I wanted to bring it up here – if you have a QB that likes to run the ball and want to take advantage of it, you will no longer be relegated to using the Spread playbook. Certain playbooks will still have a heavier focus on QB running plays, but each playbook will have a significant portion of QB runs for a mobile QB. And if you’re a statue in the pocket, don’t worry - we’ve been able to make it so that even the QB run heavy playbooks will lead to fewer rushing attempts for “immobile” quarterbacks. Now it truly depends on the player and not the playbook for you to get the most use out of your quarterback.
UPDATED TRAITS AND ATTRIBUTES MEAN EVERY QB BUILD IS VIABLE!!
Let’s not be coy here – the ISFL has a bit of a problem when it comes to players and seeking out the meta builds. This probably hits home hardest for Quarterbacks, where I believe 99% of the starting QBs in the ISFL since I’ve been here have been one of two builds. With the move to DDSPF21 Quarterbacks will have a lot more freedom in their build choices and will have an ability to further specialize with their traits and game planning choices.
What’s going on with my archetype?
If there is one glaring issue brought on from the limitations of DDSFP16, it’s that players really don’t feel any different. Thanks to the improved sim logic and the new Trait system, we have been able to create diverse Quarterbacks that fill different roles better than before. To that end, we have collapsed some old Quarterback archetypes, and are introducing FIVE(!) for players to choose from. Each of these performs differently than others, so there will be some interesting choices for teams to make when it comes to creating their strategies and building their teams!
SCRAMBLER
Scrambler Quarterbacks are the types of players who you always have to scheme for because of their ability to run the ball. These QBs are experts at extending plays with their legs, and aren’t afraid to tuck and run if they can’t find someone open downfield. That athleticism does come at a price, though, as the Scrambler QBs don’t have the arm talent that the more traditional QB types do.
MOBILE
Hold up now. We already have a Scrambler QB. Are you telling me that we will have TWO different QB builds that rely on running the ball? That’s right, kiddos, starting in Season 27, Quarterbacks will now have two options to fill their running needs. The Mobile QB is a type of player popularized by Cam Newton and Josh Allen. Larger than their cousins the Scrambler, the Mobile QB makes plays with their feet by running through smaller defenders, as opposed to outrunning them. The Mobile QB also sports a stronger arm than the Scrambler.
GUNSLINGER
Are you a fan of making questionable decisions that somehow seem to work out in your favor? Then the Gunslinger is the Quarterback for you! These players do not fear throwing into triple coverage because they have the Arm talent to compensate. Sure, sometimes the defense might make a good play on the ball, but that doesn’t deter the Gunslinger from going right back out there and making more high-risk/high-reward throws!
FIELD GENERAL
If the Gunslinger QB is a hammer, then the Field General is a scalpel. These types of Quarterbacks may not possess the arm strength that the Gunslinger does, but they make up for it with instincts and an ability to always find the open man. Field Generals are masters at controlling the ball and making sure drives don’t end early.
POCKET PASSER
Remember those days as a kid tossing the ball around with your old man, throwing the football through a tire and performing other feats of strength? Okay so I never did any of that, but I did once see a guy hit a beer can off the top of someone’s head with a football. That’s what the Pocket Passer brings to the table. These guys can hit any target at any time with pinpoint accuracy. They might not have the pocket presence that the Field General does, nor the ability to throw the ball over them there mountains, but they can throw open any receiver and fit the ball into any window.
What are these Traits I keep hearing about?
New to DDSPF21 is the idea of Traits. As your player progresses and increases in ability, you will eventually unlock the opportunity to apply Traits to them. These will have real impacts on how your player performs. For Quarterbacks the available traits are:
GUNSLINGER
Anyone who remembers watching the 1998 Minnesota Vikings remembers their very innovative offense which consisted of many imaginative plays, like, “hey Randy, run deep” and, “Randall, close your eyes and just throw the ball as far as you can.” For those who love the high-risk high reward play style of bombing it deep, the Gunslinger trait is for you. This trait will make your player more likely to throw to the receiver running the deepest route. Remember boys: chicks dig the long ball.
GAME MANAGER
In the recent past, referring to a Quarterback as a Game Manager has often been used as a slight against the player, meant to convey that they really aren’t that good of a passer to win a game. Well, the Game Manager trait will give your Quarterback Lasik surgery, meaning they’ll have an easier time telling the difference between their receiver and the defenders. Players with this trait will have a lower chance to throw interceptions and will also throw the ball away to avoid a sack more frequently.
DUAL THREAT
Unique to only the Scrambler and Mobile archetypes, the Dual Threat trait truly turns your QB into a dual threat who can beat defenses with their feet more reliably. This trait makes it so your Quarterback is more likely to scramble, and gives them a speed boost when doing so. In addition, it will give them a speed boost on designed Quarterback running plays!
ATHLETE
Makes your player more athletic, and for Quarterbacks it makes them faster both when scrambling and when running on designed QB running plays.
ROLE MODEL
Role Model is the same for everyone – it makes your player less likely to commit penalties.
P.S. A special message to K/Ps. We short changed you with yesterday's announcement. You will actually have a third attribute in your archetype that can be upgraded: Intelligence. Smart players will place their punts more accurately, giving you a better chance of pinning the offense back as close to the endzone as possible and not giving up a touchback.
That's all she wrote for the Seventh day of the Eleven Days of Sim Migration? Now everyone can make a Quarterback! Make sure to check back tomorrow for more!
