With the new sim coming with the new year, I think there will be a drastic impact on teams. The main thing I see happening is that teams that are usually considered to be good teams or teams that usually are the top of their division might fall drastically. The reason for this is that a lot of the better teams are as good as they are because the GM’s have a lot of sim knowledge (like for example the boost at 79 speed or 71 endurance). With the new sim, because nobody has a lot of information as to the sim or the coding behind it, it’s much harder for teams to “cheat the system” or just find loopholes or other ways to improve your player by taking advantage of the code. I also think teams with a lot of high TPE players will be affected by the sim, because now they have a decision to make of how important are traits. Higher TPE players can afford multiple different traits, but should they go for a bunch of traits or should hey go for increasing their stats is the question. With lower TPE players, they might not be affected as much by traits, but there is the option for them to only spend points on traits and increasing their stats to get traits if they really believe that it’s worth the other points being really low.
Im extremely excited for this league in 2021. First we're starting off with the new sim. From what I've heard about to, it allows users to have more control over their players which is what I feel was missing using the last sim engine. With the addition of player traits and new archetypes you'll see teams having to adjust and make changes. It's allowing GM's to be more unique with how they build their teams and it takes into question what type of players fit best in different formations and scenarios. With a new year comes a r/NFL class. This is honestly my favourite time of the year because it usually brings in larger classes and with that the E word gets thrown around. I do believe 2021 will bring atleast 2 new Expansion teams into the mix which is really needed. With the new sim, 2021 will see a lot of teams completely revamp what they're strategy is. The next 2-3 seasons will be a total crap shoot as teams work out kinks and try and find the new "meta". I'm hoping we see a lot of records broken or realize that some records never will. I love how healthy the league is looking going into 2021 as well the league stepping it up a level with the new sim.
What WON'T the sim change? I welcome it. For one, the most effective runners will no longer be Quarterbacks. No running back this season has a rush of over 30 yards, and yet QBs can commonly pull that off in the right circumstances. For two, I wrote an ENTIRE FREAKING 2500 WORD ARTICLE ABOUT HOW MUCH THE CURRENT SIM SUCKS. In that very long article, I barely even scratched the surface. I didn't even get into specific builds, like how with barely any TPE certain players and archetypes can be extremely effective without much investment, especially OLine, or how even builds themselves got stratified to the point that anyone who plays an archetype other than Game Manager at their QB is blatantly hampering their team. If nothing else, the fact that nobody knows all that much about the sim right now means that there will be a ton of interesting experimentation, especially with traits. Do you get your traits immediately? Is it worth speeding up towards a trait tier when that could mean your build could be suboptimal on the way? What even is optimal at this point? What traits are the best? What archetypes are the best? And how much of a change will it be that in order to get a stat to 100, you'll need to invest an extra 50 TPE in it? It'll definitely be interesting.
New year, new sim, and with it brings one of the most significant changes to the league: The Death of the Sim Test. As it stands right now, teams and players can sit and simulate thousands of games in order to tweak their win percentage ever so slightly. For me, I have my doubts on how much one can trust the results of testing. It’s impossible to predict with certainty what another team is going to do, and if they change their offensive or defensive strats even slightly, it calls the results of any test against their old strat into question.
This is not without saying that I myself am not a fan of sim testing--I actually love it. It’s a fun thing to be doing while listening to podcasts. However, I think it does the league a disservice with its over-reliance. It also is a tool for finding the meta on certain archs and builds, and for me, knowing the meta inside and out ruins a good part of the league. It pigeon-holes everyone who wants their player to do well into one specific arch or player build.
The new year and new sim will bring about a new meta, of course, and after playing around with DDSPF21 I am confident in saying there is no easy way to sim test, and thus, the secrets of the meta will be much harder to eke out, and GM’s will have to figure out a new way to develop their strats other than simulating thousands of games and picking the highest win rate percentage.
2021 is gonna be another good year for not just ISFL but all sim leagues. Every league is always expanding with PBE adding 4 new teams in 2020 and ISFL with I think 2 new teams, partially because of COVID helping the leagues get more attention. I will definitely expect another expansion with new teams next year as the league gets more and more players through recruitment. Another r/NFL recruitment would be big for the league as well. The new sim engine is also exciting. I don't know too much about the changes in the engine but I would hope for more realistic simulations. Something that I would hope for but I'm pretty sure they don't have yet is an index similar to OOTP used in PBE. I find it very hard to track career stats so that would be something to look to. In terms of league standings and the future of the teams, I'm not too knowledgeable about the futures of the teams. But if I had to guess, I do like what the New York Silverbacks are doing in only their second season in the league. I'm confident they will be a strong powerhouse in a couple seasons. The Otters always have a dynasty going and I don't think they will fall down from it in 2021. My own team the Outlaws are gonna have to part ways with the old Man QB Jay Cue so I think we would need to find a proper replacement soon or we might struggle in 2021.
