We sat down with Baltimore Hawks wide receiver Matthew Vincent to ask him a few questions;
What are your goals this season?
My goals for the season would be to get my foot in the door. I don't expect to be a force right away, but I will try my hardest to make it happen. I guess statistically, I would like 40 receptions, 600 yards, and 4 touchdowns as my baseline for the season, with minimal drops. ha, I have always loved the phrase, 'if you touch it, you gotta catch it', and I'll live by it. Hopefully I can surpass those numbers.
Do you see yourself staying with the Hawks after your contract ends or do plan to eventually move onto other teams?
I have made my wishes known to the GM and he knows what he has to do to retain me. I want to remain with the hawks for the rest of my career, but we cannot be stagnant in free agency. I'll try to be transparent with my decision, but we will see what happens in two years time.
What is your biggest strength?
Probably my patience. I have always been good about waiting my turn for things and I think it really showed during the preseason where most of my receptions were in the second half of games. I know that when I am open, my QB will get me the ball, I just have to wait for the right moment.
What type of receiver would you describe yourself as?
I never quite liked the term, but I am kind of a 'bully' player. I like to use my superior strength and size to get to the ball. I would say that I have some of the more reliable hands on the team, but not quite the speed to out-run some guys.
What makes you stand out from other receivers?
What makes me a standout player is that I am not trying to mimic anyone's play style. Sure, I take some moves from about every other wideout, but I try to make it my own. There are those guys that are always compared to; Randy Moss, Jerry Rice, Calvin Johnson, Antonio Brown, Julian Edelman, Julio Jones, and now... Me. Hopefully you will see imitators of my game sometime in the next 10-15 years. that's when I will know that I have made it.
During the preseason, most games you had less than 50 yards but in game three recorded 108 yards. How do you plan to make game three the "norm" during the regular season?
I gotta break tackles haha. I had a good amount of catches in each of my games and it helped the team move the ball. not trying to take a shot at my coaches, but it all depends on the route. If I get open on a deep route, we will gain more yards than if I am on a short route. that was the game plan for the other games was get me short receptions to get those first downs on the high percentage passes. The biggest stat I am looking for is a W in the wins column and an Ultimus in the trophy case. Ill catch 3 yard routes all day if it guarantees us those two things.
Describe a day in the life of Matthew Vincent.
A normal day for me goes something like this:
- wake up at 7am, snooze alarm, wake up again 30 minutes later
- Poptart or eggs for breakfast.
- shower and get ready by 830am
- head to practice facility for a workout. Everyday is leg day
- Do 7-on-7's with the team
- team lunch from 12 until 1
- put the pads on and go through practice
- get home at 5pm
- cook dinner - go to meal is Chicken, noodles, and smoothies
- After that I will either hang with friends, have a light work out, or pop in a video game.
- get to bed by 1030, watch netflix and pass out by midnight.
Rinse, Wash, Repeat.
Are you enjoying Baltimore?
I'm not too much of a big city guy, so I am living in the suburbs currently. I've always wanted to live on the water, so may move their in the future, probably around the Essex area. Baltimore as a city is not too bad though. Being in the NSFL, it would be difficult for me to be in a rural area, so Baltimore is a close second.
