It is tough for me to compare the experience of watching a DDSPF16 and the experience of watching the new sim as just joined the league this season, but from what I can tell from watching old games, I really enjoy the pace of the new sim. I know it is slower and a lot of people complain about that, but it makes me feel like we can pay attention to every play a little bit more. It is still early to tell how the player performance and stats will look when comparing both engines, but it sure seems like the running game has been downsized a little bit and even as a RB I don’t think that should be such a huge issue. In the NFL we can see the game changing its culture very rapidly as teams become more pass-happy offenses and I think the timing of the sim change actually makes it seem like that is what could be happening in the once too run-heavy ISFL. Maybe it’s a sign of the things to come and a way to show that the sport is in constant change, which would require a new way to look at the league and this feeling of trying to figure out thing together with the old-timers actually makes me feel good!
The new sim brings with it plenty of pros and cons. Easily noticeable are the new fields, the fact that kicks get some sort of showing on the stream, the ball moves through the air on passes, the tickers scroll far too quickly to really understand and disappear between plays, the playbooks are radically different, and the teams get to set their own home fields.
I’ll start with the bad. The defensive pass interference calling is blatantly broken. Offenses will always accept a penalty that moves them…0 yards from the line of scrimmage. It is entirely possible that a team will wipe out a massive play to accept a zero yard penalty. This just goes to show that while the game may have improved significantly, the sim itself still has fundamental errors. Additionally, my player has sucked. It wasn’t until game three that I got my first stat other than a penalty.
The good us that there is a noticeable improvement in time management and play calling when a team is down in the final minutes of a game. I haven’t (yet) seen a team call a timeout before punting the ball to the other team. The ball moving through the air on passing plays is a definite improvement. I’m sure kickers appreciate having something on screen during their kicks. And the Yeti hands down have the cleanest field in the entire sim.
So I have not seen a game in the new sim yet. I don't actually watch the sims that often. Last season I think I watched two three games. But since I have to for this PT, I will sit down and watch a game while giving my first thoughts. The first thing I like is how much easier it easy to see what happended on a play with the grey box in the upper right corner. It was kind of hard to read an outcoome of the play in the last sim.
The customized fields are also great and give each team their own character which I like. The fact that the stats are also there in the bottom left is great. The crowd reactions after a big defensive ply r are good as well. I'm not sure if they were in the last sim but they're cool. I will also say each player having their own dedicated stats page is probably the best addition that's been made since switching sims. That's rteally awesome and I'm going to have a lot of fun looking over those pages as a stat nerd. Of course as a new user and one that's kind of casual, I don't know enough about how the old engine worked to really critque what has changed with the new engine when it comes to a play-by-play basis.
My very first impressions of the new sim is that it’s really tough to watch the streams on mobile. It’s almost impossible to read the play by play. On desktop it is nice though. I’m not sure I like how it shows the entire field the whole time and I definitely liked the shorter streams of the previous version. The gameplay is interesting, showing each pass attempt will take some getting used to. In the past version if it showed the pass play it was going to be a completion, interception, or sack. There seems to be many big plays and for the most part high tpe players seem to be outperforming low tpe players more than the ‘16 version. My player is off to a good start. He’s third in the league in tackles and seems to be a force throughout the entire game. In the past it seemed things would really slow down in the fourth quarter. As a team my Wraiths are off to a good start. We lost on the road to a very good Chicago team but followed that up with two straight wins against division contenders Sarasota and Colorado. I’m hoping in future games my player makes a run and stands out as a true high TPE superstar, luckily the season is still young. (220 words)

As a rookie my first impressions of the new sim are also my first impressions of the ISFL altogether. I don’t have a lot of frame of reference compared to most veterans. That being said I have no complaints regarding the new sim. Sure there are some graphical oddities or weird decisions but that’s to be expected. Real football can be far weirder than anything I’ve seen in the sim. (flashbacks to that one Colts trick play….). Of course in the DSFL my player has only had one game so it’s a bit early to evaluate how they’re doing. Based on the single game they seemed pretty average so far. The streams are enjoyable, as the predictions give me someone to cheer for until I actually develop favorite teams or rivals. It’d be nice if there was at least a seasonal prediction for DSFL but I understand we can’t have predictions for everything. I don’t think I’ve seen every field yet, but of the ones I remember the New York Silverbacks is by far my favorite. The logo is simple enough, colors make sense, and the field design isn’t overwhelming. As much as I love the Grey Ducks, I’m not sure about making the entire field grey and blue. Others like New Orleans Second Line have a pretty busy logo, which is inherently part of the field design.
I personally have mixed feelings about the switch to this new sim engine. As a long time general manager with the old sim, learning this new sim feels like knowing how to ride a tricycle and learning how to ride a bicycle, and it took me a long time as a child to learn to ride a bicycle. That said, the war room in New York (looking at you, Steg) has proven capable enough to get us to a 3-0 record, so it is difficult to complain too much about not yet understanding all of the moving pieces. My biggest gripe, personally, is my inability to distinguish whether one linebacker position or another is better geared towards recording tackles; we drafted TC knowing full well what his goal was with this player, and every fiber of my being wants to get him there, but with the sim switch, I am struggling to identify how best to approach that. There is also obviously an interesting issue with the running back position, which I am convinced Brooks Piggott intentionally coded into the game; the boom or bust nature of the position has the potential to dampen interest in it long term, which I find extremely worrisome. I am of the opinion that we already have a problem with too many people wanting to play the superstar quarterback or wide receiver; if running back comes off the table as a viable option for most, that can only exacerbate the issue.
I think this new sim engine is something we will have to get use to as there is so much change just layout wise. I finally got use to tracking what is going on in plays in the old sim and then we switched. With this one it is a bit harder to track what is going on but eventually I will get use to it as well. I think my biggest peeve with the new sim is that it is not in dark mode. I do not even know if dark mode is an option but the white background is so bright it can probably light the beacons of Gondor.
The first game for Norfolk did not go great but Bean did end up having a good game. He ended up with 6 tackles and 1 sack against London. In regards to having a favourite homefield I am going to have to go with Norfolk because of the blue field. The only reason is because I am a Boise State Broncos fan and it goes into Bean’s lore of wanting to protect the ducks while at Boise
Overall I think this new sim will be good for us but it will definitely take some time to get us to and figure out.
