(S27) PT1 - First Impressions

Being this my first year I think the sim is really cool. It's really cool to be able to see where players are on the field and are able to follow your own player and see how well they do in live time. Also, I like how it keeps updated stats throughout the game in the bottom corners. It's nice to see who the leading stat players are and to see how close the teams are stats-wise. It also adds a bit of drama for when the games are close and it gets the heart pumping when the other team is driving a little bit and you need a huge stop by your defense. 

For myself, my player David Ramczyk is doing a lot better than I thought. So far Ramczyk had 16 tackles in 3 games as well as 1 sack. I was hoping for a little bit more sacks but I am still happy to be able to see my player get more tackles than I thought. I don't have a favorite home field design for myself. Of course, I would put my own team, Tijuana, as my favorite. However, I feel every time has a good field and makes it their own place and are creative with how they went about creating it.

The new sim is interesting for me and I mostly like it.  The games last a lot longer now which makes the close games suspenseful but blowouts last way too long now.  This will help newer players follow the stream though as when I first started I was very lost trying to keep track of the stream so this is mostly a positive.  The new fields are really cool to me right now but some of the fields its hard to tell where the first down marker is mid play and I'm not a huge fan of not knowing during the play if the first has been met or not.  For my team though Portland has gotten off to a hot start again this season and I couldn't be happier for my team!  My player is having a decent season so far for Portland, he hasn't recorded an INT or FR yet but he is making tackles and breaking up passes, so all in all if he keeps playing this way hopefully Portland can make another run at the finals!  Also next time the sim moves hopefully the commentary isn't filled with the term "pancake" the amount it is used in this game kinda ruins the games for me, every now and then is funny but a couple times a quarter is way too much.

My favorite part about the new sim is that a 3-4 base defense is now viable. Why? Because it makes Plop the most important defensive player on the field.

The biggest advantage of the 3-4 defense is that with four linebackers on the field you have more speed to cover today’s fast receivers playing in a spread offense. Just like weight is key for the nose tackles, speed is key in the defensive pass game.

Plus, a 3-4 defensive is more versatile. You can blitz, drop in to coverage, or use a combination. With a 4-3 base defense, it’s pretty obvious the front four are coming after your quarterback.

I love being a nose tackle because it lets me eat just about whatever I want. Height makes a little difference, but weight is king. In general, bigger is better. The nose tackle must be able to draw a double team. Even the biggest player cannot work in this system if he is not strong enough to draw and hold the double-team. Combine a low center of gravity with exceptional strength, and you’re on your way to the Pro Bowl.

The nose tackle has one job: plug the middle to open up gaps for your teammates. A great nose tackle will require a double-team, which closes the A gap on one side. When a nose tackle draws a-double team, it also frees up one of the middle linebackers since the guard has to help the center block the big man. Without the nose tackle, it all falls apart.

The new sim passes the eye test for sure. It's fun seeing every teams home field because to me it gives the league a little more life where the old sim was kinda vanilla. I think the new sim takes a little too long to go through a game but its after play summary is very fast and it can often be hard to tell who made a play. While games in the old sim were faster it was easier to tell what player was lined up where. As for what I've seen my player do in the sims has been night and day. I have not seen Mac Griddle in the sim yet and whether that's due to how the new sim rotates players or something else I hope Griddle can improve enough to see the field. In the old sim Griddle was on the field for most every defensive snap but new sim, new rules. Overall I have been enjoying the new sim, call me biased but I think that New York has the best of the new fields, the gray is easy on the eyes and the end zone art is my favorite design of the new fields.

Way too many teams do the full colored field.. Let's keep it basic. Double black/white outline on the team name in the endzones

Ok so I like the new sim as a whole. It's not perfect but it's an improvement over the old one. I personally love some of the fields. I prefer the plain grass just because it's easier on the eyes, but there are some fantastic colored fields. I really like KCC's end zones, they blend the team colors in with some mountains and it looks great. I also really like Minnesota's field. their end zones are a bit plain, but the turf its self is fantastic and whoever designed it did a fantastic job. Norfolk is another one with a great field, the blue works very well and I like their end zones too. However there are some fields that are not so great. Dallas's end zones are weird in that they are both too plain and too busy with the random little pattern they have going on. Another one I am not a fan of is BBB's field. the big logo with both of their old logos around it are far too big for my liking and remind me of a hockey rink. Likewise their end zones are so bad I literally laughed out loud when I saw them; they are like clip art and janky looking text.

So far I have been enjoying the new sim. At first, I thought with how much slower it was than the old one, but after watching for a couple weeks, it is actually kind of nice. Getting to see how everything plays out in a bit more detail is very cool, especially for me when I try and track what my player on defense is doing. Speaking of my player, he has been doing pretty good in the new sim. While he hasn't been everywhere on the scoresheet, Jones has come up with a couple of big plays, including a game winning pick six. I envisioned Jones as a big playmaker who is great at coming up with clutch plays, so it's nice to see my vision come to life thus far.

The new fields look very nice across the board, the graphics folks across the league did a very good job of designing the fields. My two favorites have to be the two teams my player is on, Portland and Chicago. The Portland field looks like it has scales, which is a nice touch for the Python's home field. Chicago has a grey theme to their field, which is very fitting with the branding of the Butchers.
