(S28) PT 3 - What If?

The greatest decision ever made in the entire 28 year history of International Simulation Football League is when the Austin Copperheads decided to draft Kyle Idlewyld first overall in the season 20 draft. He was the missing piece of the puzzle for the expansion team that just made the playoffs for the first time and they went on to win Ultimus in a season where many did not take them seriously. On a personal note I can't imagine what would have happened if I was drafted by one of the other early teams in that draft like, umm, honestly I can't remember who had early picks in that draft. Maybe Arizona? sounds right. Yeah I imagine that without taking Kyle Idlewyld the Copperheads would not have won the Ultimus and quite possibly never have evr made the playoffs again, which would have been very embarrassing for them. I say this in the most absolutely humble way possible of course, everyone else on the team was pretty cool too (except Easton Cole of course). Kyle Finished as the best Defensive end that year and it was truly all downhill for him after that, actually he might have won another award but that's lost in the annals of history with the holy grail and who framed Roger Rabbit.

Borgo San Lorenzo was drafted 16th overall by the Philadelphia Liberty in the Season 27 ISFL Draft. If he had been drafted one spot earlier, he would have gone to The Honolulu Hahalua instead of Cornerback Jason Bradshaw, user Gumbaman. Honolulu currently has the Vertical Threat Tight End spot covered by Ragnar Krashwagen, user CementHands, who I know from the SHL. With the large receiver spot covered, Honolulu would have likely wanted Borgo to be a blocking TE, but he’s not interested in that. The option to switch positions was also there for Borgo, but he wanted to be an offensive player, and Honolulu is already covered at the Quarterback spot by Chika Fujiwara, at Running Back by Nicholas Ayers and Cobra Kai, and at WR by Jed Podolak, and Lalo Salamanca. While both of the wide receivers are a little low on TPE, Lalo is young and upcoming and Borgo is only a season behind, so there’s no reason to stock up on young Wide Receivers if there’s already youth coming up soon. Borgo is very happy he ended up in Philadelphia, and while they’re still in the upswing of a rebuild, he is looking forward to the future of the Liberty as their starting Vertical Threat Tight End.

Way back in Season twenty I want to say I was reaching the end of my contract with the hawks and was considering what to do about my new contract. I had seen that everyone who had tried to do free agency had had a terrible experience or was tampered so in my bright idea I was going to do a fully public free agency. I wanted to improve free agency in the league and I wanted to answer questions and respond candidly to them. One of the things that was coming in the league was an expansion with the Honolulu hahalua and the Sarasota sailfish (who's logo is not a sailfish but a marlin and don't let them fool you into thinking otherwise). Now we didn't know what the names were but it was said that it would be two teams and that it was going to hit in two seasons after it was announced. I was a very young Defensive end but I was putting up pretty good Tackle for loss numbers that I was on pace for to break the record and I hoped would bring me into the Hall of fame. It is from this hubris that everything went wrong. The week after I announced that I was in a 10 mile per hour car crash which set my car on fire and forced me to crawl out of the car on the passenger side that I wasn't on. This came after I had received interest from a few teams in the league but most aggressively from the Chicago butchers. This real life events caused me to not sign with the butchers and just stay with the hawks for the next few seasons befoe considering what to do with expansion then. I don't want to persume causality on what would happen with the steelsound butchers but it was the first event cited in his resulting meltdown after being bullied out of the league for the trades he was trying to make to manufacture a window for the team. Anyway I'm on the butchers now and I could have just been on them more than a year ago if I wanted to.

As my knowledge on the greater league is not great I’ll be talking about my draft position in the DSFL and ISFL, I don’t know how interactive I would be drafted somewhere else as both Minn and Aus have been extremely welcoming and a big part of me staying and being an active member in the leagues, and being somewhere else may have changed that. In the DSFL draft if I had been taken 1 earlier I would have been on Portland, if I was there I would have been 3rd choice DT so I would have not had much game time, maybe I could of won 2nd place DT but 1st choice was impossible and I don’t think Portland would of kept me at DT. If I went one later I would of been with Dallas and of course that means I would of won a Ultimini, and it also means I would've taken Beefcake Johnson's place in the team so I would of been a starting DT on a championship winning team, which would have been nice but I’m happy in Minn. For the ISFL draft 1 up would have been with Philly, in Philly I might of got called up immediately to provide back up as a second DT, also I would have been with Negs my Minn QB which would've been cool, one draft position down would've been either OCO or Sartosa as a trade happened, both have pretty good DT cores so I probably would stayed down another season same as Aus unless asked to switch position, so not much change.

The main thing that jumps out to me when I think about the most important “what if” questions relating to ISFL has to be about my own player. 

What if I decided to create as a quarterback? When I first joined the league, I was *this* close to making a quarterback with an eye on becoming one of the greatest signal callers to ever suit up. I wanted the glory, the fame and all of the trappings that come with being a top-flight quarterback. I don’t know why I changed my mind at the last second, but I decided on safety and have been here ever since. I wonder, had I been a quarterback, if I would’ve signed with the Seawolves as a free agent? I think of all of those memories and friends I have in Norfolk and shudder to imagine a world without them. Would I have fallen down the draft boards? Would I have lost my passion for the league if I didn’t get picked as highly? And what about my DSFL career? Maybe I would still be down there to this day. What if I was drafted to a team without a quarterback need and ended up perennially riding the pine?

I certainly wouldn’t be in New York amongst my Silverback family, which is another potential that brings me heartache. Sure, safety isn’t the most glamorous position, but I wouldn’t trade all my friendships and experiences to go back in time to change my position. I’ve been in two of the best locker rooms and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Gotta be 100% honest, I dont understand league history in the slightest so I'm going to consider how things could be different given Austin not trading up to slect in in S27. First off, Austin would be in a different spot as they could've selected from elsewhere to fill their D-line hole while maintaining their high-level DT instead of moving him in place of the current third worst DT in the ISFL per tackles and all that good stuff. They'd also be able to hang onto their assets from the trade, but those seem negligible given there wasn't a whole lot of value given up for me.

As for my story, I have it in my mind I would have ended up on New Orleans, given the presence that sloth has there, and that no other team had people I was super familiar with that could be established in their war rooms. A situation like that would most likely necessitate a similar move to where I am now--either I stay a DT, or a much better DT shifts to another d-line position to accomodate my call up. Looking over their roster I'd fit into their youth-movement style as they feature a ton of S26's on their roster.

All in all, that trade not happening wouldn't be super impactful for either club. I'm no clubhouse riot and they'd both havereplacements at DT if I weren't there, or replacements at other positions I'd fill.

Obviously, the biggest decision in International Simulation Football League history was when the Philadelphia Liberty drafted me, Lonnie Jackson. It was the best pick in any International Simulation Football League draft history. I was taken with the 32nd pick overall, or the 4th pick in the 3rd round, which every option you prefer, but I don't know why you're reading this. This is just a point task I'm doing for 3 TPE, it really isn't serious. Are you stalking me? Anyway, back to the best draft pick in International Simulation Football League history. They got me, Lonnie Jackson, with the 32nd overall pick. An absolute steal. I am very close to max earning now and have an updater job, so I will be able to max earn for my whole career. I will be able to make a huge impact when I make the ISFL. If everything goes according to plan, I'm going to help the Liberty win many, many championships. If I was drafted to any other team, I would be doing the exact same thing. Making an impact, being a big presence in the locker room, ultimately helping them win many Ultimus championships. But I don't have to think about that. I'm where I'm meant to be, with a great GM and great teammates.

One of the biggest "what if?" Moments I have experienced in the course of my career here in the NSFL/ISFL came during my first ever draft into the NSFL back in Season 10 with my first player Joliet L. Christ. In that draft, there were two clear teams in need of a new quarterback to lead their franchise and within the season 10 class there were really only 2 that had any potential of being a franchise QB and that was myself as well as Adriana Falconi. Now it was one of the most unique drafts because the two teams that needed a QB picked every single pick in the top 5 of the draft. San Jose owned 1, 2, and 4 while Philadelphia owned 3 and 5 respectively.

San Jose went the obvious picks taking D'Pez Poopsie and Kazimir Oles 1 and 2 which left Philadelphia to decide what to do with picks running out. Obviously San Jose would then take their QB at 4 so it was take a QB or take a player and take whoever was not taken at 5. As history shows, Philadelphia went with corner Lucari Felix, a user known to produce nothing but draft busts time after time and passed on picking their QB. San Jose got their pick and took Christ Jr. who went on to be a hall of fame QB and a user who was co-GM of the year twice. Christ changed the game and Falconi was always a shade behind. The two even played in an Ultimus game that saw JLC win in San Jose's first title ever. 

Falconi was very very good, but Christ was a hall of famer and a true game changer for his time. You have to wonder, "What if Philadelphia chose Christ?" Would he or Falconi stay in similar situations? Would AW ever become a co GM? Would San Jose have won an Ultimus and potentially had CK leave the position awhile ago? You have to wonder a lot of things here.

As we've seen through alternate history thought experiments, the present day can change through the simple change of a decision that was made a while ago that may be insignificant at the time but can prove to have significant consequences in the future. I would say that the drafting decisions made by the NOLA FO since S24 have been pivotal to our current success and may give us a chance in the next year or so to win an Ultimus. Since S24, Toblerone, Ugarth, the Adam Twins, Dorothy, LeBong, and myself have all been drafted by NOLA and have each individually contributed greatly to this team's run of success over the past 4 seasons. I attribute that to our great chemistry that we have built up with one another as we have been drafted together and our continued growth as a draftee group helping to elevate the level of play of the whole team. I believe if even one of above was not drafted by the team, we would not have the same level of success as I believe that we would not be able to have developed the level of chemistry and collective work-ethic that has allowed us to be where we are currently in the present day!

Plenty of moves in the International Simulation Football League that could be described as “What if?” scenarios. From trades, to draft pick or appointed expansion bids. In my time in the league, I can think of one moment that changed the course of the franchise. The move is a General Manager pick by head office. Since I started in the league back in Season 21, the Chicago Butchers were known for being the worst franchise. Everyone in the DSFL level dreaded being drafted by them. Plenty of reasons are for this, from failing General Managers, who would draft their capital for an inactive running back to drama of the players taking over. The franchise certainly took a hit for it’s reputation and its future looked bleak. What is the saving grace of the franchise is Bayley and Muford taking over as general managers. From Day One, they have made moves to turn the ship around. They picked their draft picks well and made the right trades. This helped propel them into contention for the NSFC in no time. What if the head office didn’t pick Bayley as the general manager? Would they still be struggling?  Would they have won an Ultimus? Personally, I know Bayley and I think the team would have continued to struggle. I have a strong feeling that picking Bayley helped the franchise overall.
